#pinephone

In the meantime, I must get an up-to-date OS onto my #PinePhone. As I've said in a few posts here, I've had it since 2020, but since then I've lacked the spoons to teach myself complicated new hacker skills. Including installing mobile OS, even on a device designed to make it easier.

Speaking of the PP, maybe a range of cheap DumbPhones could be based on that tech? A quick search on the #DumbPhone tag here shows a lot of interest, and on the same tag with an "s". How about it @pine64?

Now that sound is at least mostly working on the #Fairphone5, I have installed #PostmarketOS on it, and wow! It is a totally different experience from the #pinephone . Super-snappy and clean.
I don't love #phosh (I've grown to really like µLauncher), but I'll give #sxmo another try soon.
Still need phone audio to work, but this is already _so_ good!

Catacomb's latest 1.3.0 release fixes an interesting issue:

Apparently on the PinePhone (Pro) when disabling `eg25-manager`, libinput generates a bunch of `XF86WakeUp` press/release events, ultimately ending up with the key permanently pressed. Since Catacomb supports multi-key bindings, it wouldn't trigger bindings anymore, since it only looked at the ones with `XF86WakeUp` active.

Linux smartphone users, what phone and OS do you prefer and why?

I'm in the process of learning about Linux OS on smartphones with the goal of eventually using a Linux phone as my daily driver.

What features are most important to you?
What do you mostly do with your phone other than call/text?
What about mobile banking?? >_>
Which phone do you feel pairs best with Linux?

Screen reader users: I am so sorry for what you're about to experience...

@badrihippo @fbinin @furilabs

I'm running #Mobian on a #PinePhone. It's OK for me, but I wouldn't recommend it. The hardware is far too slow for most peoples expectations and battery life is horrible. It seems to be out of stock, anyway:

Btw. there is a #MobileLinux, esp. Mobian, #Jabber channel: mobile-linux@conference.conver

And a Mobian Matrix room: !wcicgpuipefztgjwrz\:matrix.org

everytime i do a #postmarketos upgrade on my #pinephone, i magically hope it will make the hardware better.

@cwebber Language and branding is important in conveying ideas and setting expectations for the general public. For example, Apple managed to convince people that “a Mac” was a totally different type of thing from “a PC”; if it's different, maybe it's better. And an “iPhone“ is not the same type of thing as a “computer”, so don't expect to be able to do everything a “computer” can; it's a new different thing.

So I think we need a word that means a local-first computer that you actually control. “PC” is already taken; “sickobox” is (alas) a hard sell.

I propose we use the word #cyberdeck. A *cyberdeck* means a local-first computer that you actually control. My #PinePhone with #postmarketOS is a prototype cyberdeck. @modal are trying to make a ready-for-primetime cyberdeck.

@kde @olivenolje @plasmamobile

I hadn't heard until Plasma Mobile until now, I had only heard of the pinephone one. I am excited to hear more about the project development in the future!

Three months without a #smartphone, or indeed a #phone of any kind, is unfortunately about to end upon the post delivery today. I caved in due to the "digital pariah" effect, aka the "how can you survive without a phone you weirdo" effect. (In actuality, living rurally and not driving, I need to have some kind of emergency communication ability - kids, health issues, snakes, a wild variety of potential mishaps etc). I really wanted to get a #LinuxPhone like a #PinePhone but battery life is still iffy (see emergency requirements above), and the camera is crap, which, other than the roughly one text message I receive every six months, is the only reason a slightly decent phone is worth having. So, a second hand Pixel has been aquired, and slapping #GrapheneOS on it is the plan.
