This year’s major gift - moving to a new mirrorless Nikon Z5II! Came with a 24-50mm f/4-6.3 kit lens, plus the FTZ II adapter so I can still use all my F mount lenses as well (some will now be manual focus, but they’ll still function otherwise). Just waiting for the battery to charge so I can start to set it up….

Update for the 3-4 of you that care! 🤣 After much consternation, I’ve packed my bags for 2 weeks in #Scotland. The #PeakDesign bag is a little heavier than I prefer, but with the capture clip it will be the most functional by far, as it will allow me to be hands-free to hold maps, get water, etc. There’s a handful of things in it (as opposed to in the other bag) because I want them easily accessible on the plane…once we get to a hotel I can lighten it considerably by shifting them, which will also leave more room for fulfilling the role of a normal traveling day pack.

Ended up deciding on this combo:
- #NikonZ5ii, 28-120 f/4
- #YashicaMAT124, med yellow filter
- 15 rolls #KodakTriX
- 1 roll #IlfordDelta3200, primarily as more of an excuse to ask for hand checks.

I predict I will either run out of film or come back with just over half exposed. I was very tempted to go all in with film taking a combination of 35mm and 120, but then I was at the mercy of CT scanners, and wouldn’t have the flexibility of the Z5ii’s low light capabilities. So I plan on taking film shots of the things that are the most striking, and using digital for backups of those as well as general travel type snapshots.

The #REI ruckpack has been my travel bag of choice for the last several international trips we’ve been on. The hip belt is substantial (more in line with a “backpacking” backpack) and there is a zippered flap that covers it as well as the shoulder straps so that when you’re dealing with something like an overhead compartment you don’t have all these straps dangling about. We’ve gotten good at “travel laundry” so there’s usually a decent bit of space left over for purchases while abroad - for instance I’m confident I could easily fit two 750mL bottles of Islay Whisky, assuming Edinburgh has a duty-free shop… 🤔

If anyone has traveled with any of the above and has any last minute tips or suggestions, please let me know!

Playing around with #Darktable. Took some shots this past weekend, and I found a LUT pack - this one is called "Ektar." I've only shot a few rolls of #Ektar so I am nowhere near experienced enough to know if this is close, but I liked the saturated look.

I’m starting to zero in on my camera loadout for my upcoming trip. I got a capture clip which works really well on my everyday backpack strap. It allows my to quickly clip the #NikonZ5ii to have free hands to use the #YashicaMAT. The clutch strap on the Nikon means I don’t need a neck strap.

If I take a film camera, I think it will be the Yashica. It has a meter and I have a yellow filter for it, no separate meter or rangefinder necessary. I walked around at a lakeside nature preserve today with the backpack on my back and the Yashica slung cross-body. The backpack also has room for additional stuff so it will make a good day pack as opposed to a sling or shoulder bag just large enough for the cameras.

Now I just have to determine if it’s worth dealing with film in the airports and carrying a second camera for those sweet, sweet film shots. I can certainly buy film in Scotland, but with a fridge full at home I’d like to avoid that and the current “mail anything to the US” situation is…evolving rapidly. I’ve just enjoyed film so much over the past year that bringing digital only feels like I’m cheating somehow. 🤷🏻‍♂️

How do some of you decide if you’re bringing film or not when traveling abroad?

When you are taking a picture of a squirrel and something magical, hilarious, and unexpected happens.

Took the new digital camera out today to get a little more acquainted with it before taking it on our upcoming trip.

A bit miffed that I didn’t have my settings quite where I would prefer…the shot was locked at f/8 and 1/200, but then again I wasn’t expecting a flying squirrel action shot.

My first attempt at #Sunny16 this weekend appears to have been…sub-optimal. And to think the entire time I was worried about underexposing, which is what likely led me to overexpose.

Assuming the focus is calibrated decently on the rangefinder, I believe I will be taking this #Mamiya6 folder as a second camera to Scotland later this month. I’ll likely use my phone’s metering app. All else will be on the #NikonZ5ii
