#Kolumne
„Ich habe nicht versagt – ich habe nur 10.000 Wege gefunden, die nicht funktionieren.“
Schon T. A. Edison wusste: Auch negative Ergebnisse bringen Erkenntnis.

Great job by Lucia Coll, a student working in my group. Lucia's #scicomm video about why #nullresults are interesting made it to the jury mentions of the national science communication competition #fastforwardscience in Germany. Check out the video here! instagram.com/p/DIgx4cNtWo0/?h

Do reflection tests impact philosophical thinking?

I found 10 #nullResults of taking reflection tests before (vs. after) making decisions about #philosophy: doi.org/10.31234/osf.io/y8sdm_

Since Analysis accepted that paper, #xPhi got another null #replication: doi.org/10.1111/mila.12558

PS: I'm sympathetic to those short on time or caught up in job changes. But those pointing to #nullresults didn't understand the point of #preregistration. Those whose submissions were rejected by journals could still share the results as #preprints.

#238 Bridging null hypothesis testing and estimation

Thoughts: An overview of the ways you can claim "no effect" under a bayesian framework.

#236 Using Bayes to get the most out of non-significant results

Thoughts: A bayesian way to investigate "no effect": Bayes Factors. Cool guide on how to think about priors (post hoc even).

#205 Equivalence Tests Using {marginaleffects}

Thoughts: Easily testing for "no effect" is important. Here's a tutorial by @carlislerainey using @VincentAB r pkg.

#199 Mixed model equivalence test using R and PANGEA

Thoughts: While there are easier ways to compute tests for such models now, it is nice to see how you'd do so manually.

#166 Using Bayes to get the most out of non-significant results

Thoughts: Not sure how to set more meaningful priors for your Bayes Factors? This paper has a guidance. Great for simple designs.

A small rant about zombie ideas and the tendency to keep looking for modifications of study methods to avoid concluding that a null result is really null. deevybee.blogspot.com/2024/03/

attendees! As you submit your abstracts, remember: Results offer valuable lessons, even if they are not what you were hoping to get.

🚨My new paper is out. I explore the effect of uncertainty framing (epistemic or aleatory) on veracity judgements. The "negative" results indicate that phrasing the judgement as "how SURE are you... " vs "how LIKELY is it... " does *not* impact veracity judgments.
