I am trying to solve a problem with an instrument in a Nyquist score.

Pic A shows two drum beats played one after each other. When the drum beats are played close together in time before the first beat has delayed (pic B) Nyquist adds the sounds. This is logical enough, but it can mean that the overal level is clipped. Also a real drum does not act this way if it is struck a second time: the second beat is the same volume as the first as it cancels the previous sound.

I stumbled onto some guy's video defending the use of 192K for recording all audio, and I admit I didn't watch all of his video, because a minute or two in, he said "Besides, the Nyquist Theorem IS JUST A THEOREM."

When guys like him start to sound like young earth creationists, who often say "The Theory of Evolution IS JUST A THEORY..." they lose all credibility.

I again saw a video today claiming that the quality of a digital signal degrades as you approach the Nyquist frequency (half of the sampling frequency). No. That's just not true. A band limited signal, containing information of to a frequency f, can be captured *exactly* by sampling it at any frequency larger than 2f. If you sample a band-limited signal according to this limit and then pass it through a digital to analogue converter you get *exactly the same thing* as you started with. Even if it contains data at 22 kHz and you sample it at 44.1 kHz. (But you really want it to contain nothing above 22.05 kHz or it will be aliased and you will definitely lose data).

TIL that CD audio is at 44.1 kHz because humans can only hear up to 22.05 kHz and by the #Nyquist sampling theorem, if we sample at twice the frequency we get a perfect recreation.
