We need an ethos of and in . is the best place to nurture this ethos.

Methodical thinking can be learned just as well by studying and as by solving scientific problems. It is crucial that it is interesting and that it is applied in practice, i.e., practiced.

I have a suggestion: Why not link laws to the harm for people and environment on a scientifically verifiable measure for people only, meaning employees, CEOs and board members alike get in the bind personally.

It doesn't mean breweries get in the bind, but mean drunks do.
It means thresholds for corporations. Like CO² emissions will gradually with emerging tech become criminal. No private jets anymore. It's coach or better yet trains..

"There are several overlapping groups of people who, probably for different reasons, are more likely to prefer news that shares their point of view:
(a) the ideological and politically engaged;
(b) young people, especially those who rely mainly on social media for news;
(c) women; and
(d) less socioeconomically advantaged groups."

"In markets dominated by fewer brands — often publicly funded ones such as the BBC — respondents in that market also tend to express higher levels of preference for impartiality." In Britain, where respondents use an average of four news brands, the lowest number across the 40 countries studied, 62% of respondents say they prefer news displaying no point of view.

The difference between the perspectives of classical physics and those of the Copenhagen School was therefore rooted in different views of the basic philosophical concepts: objectivity, phenomenon, causality and physical reality. The actual revolution in the philosophical foundations of physics consisted in Bohr’s seeing himself as obliged to redefine these concepts in order to retain them within the framework of the new physics. At the same time this meant a redefinition of the criteria of science.

…you need to keep analysis going because they're doing a flood of tactics now. …one of its effects is to lose the overall picture. … And then you have no overall sense of what's going on.

…this journalistic tactic of reporting what everyone says equally will result in a highly distorted information space. … The objectivity in journalism means truth. It doesn't mean reporting all sides equally. So you have to figure out the truth and report on it even if one group says that's not true. … The truth is what you report.

ncronline.org/opinion/ncr-voic #BishopBarron had been, and still is, one of the greatest #Catholicapologetics of our time, and has a history of progressive takes. His ministry, #WordOnFire, actually sued #Commonweal magazine for an article which compares his comment to a #DonaldTrump one. He's trying to be like too many #priests nowadays, taking this weird impossible #objectivity and #bothsidesism. I like and respect #RobertBarron a lot and encourage him to do more, and speak out more.

When media replace every premise of an argument until none of the original claims remain, is it still defending the same conclusion? And can the pursuite of break down meaning? write.as/ateom/building-ships-

With fewer companies dominating the #media landscape, consolidation could be driving #bias in news coverage. An economist shares insights from analyzing 100,000 articles from NYT and WSJ, and how long they got featured on the homepage: theconversation.com/is-news-bi #NYT #WSJ #objectivity

Some random notes on media:

True independence of mind surely precludes subscribing to or following any publication or service that claims to be independent.

Read, watch and listen broadly and think critically.

Always be alert to confirmation bias.

What incentives are in play?

Objectivity doesn’t exist.

If you doubt too much, pause. If you agree too much, pause.

Certainty and ‘truth’ are warnings not guarantees.

‘I don’t know’ can be a valid position.

Everything is impermanent, in flux.

And the the old classic: Opinions are like arseholes, everybody’s got one.

Purely ‘objective’ existence - if one wanted to postulate such a thing (/aberration) - would not be ultimately neutral as we are often led to believe, but rather ultimately ambivalent.

Earlier this year, the polling aggregator 538 dropped #Rasmussen Reports from its averages & forecasts, saying that the firm couldn’t meet 538’s standards for #objectivity & methodology. This drew a major backlash from #RightWing #media, especially after Rasmussen published a letter from 538 asking the #polling firm questions about its procedures & biases.

To my mind, a man without a bias cannot write interesting history — if, indeed, such a man exists. I regard it as mere humbug to pretend to a lack of bias.

Objectivity is a key dimension along which to evaluate your rigor.
While achieving perfect might be challenging, striving for it is essential in producing credible and reliable findings. By defining clear hypotheses, following standardized methods, and fostering diverse research teams who contribute through investigator triangulation and peer debriefing, you can enhance objectivity.

A personal question --

“Why would ‘similar minds’ or kin disagree about vaccinations?”
After all, the practice _has been a public health bedrock.

A clue --

> We’re used to thinking of information as being representational—that is, a piece of information represents reality, and might be true or false. But another way to look at information is to see it as a “social nexus” capable of putting people into “formation.” From this perspective, it doesn’t matter whether information is true or not.

Scripture

Show yourself in all respects a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, gravity, and sound speech that cannot be censured; then any opponent will be put to shame, having nothing evil to say of us.

Titus 2:7–8

Reading

So, now I come to a very serious undertaking in my attempt to answer your letter. When I read over the last few lines, I asked myself how it is possible for a person with academic training, who makes a claim for strict objectivity, and without a thorough investigation would never make a judgment on the smallest philosophical question, to dismiss one of the most important problems with a phrase that reminds me of something that might appear in a hick newspaper.

Letter 85

Prayer

Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross,
called from the people of the Old Covenant,
help us to live together in peace and
to foster reconciliation between peoples and religions;
graced with the freedom of the spirit,
be close to all who seek the meaning of their lives,
the truth, and deliverance from all bondage.

(here mention your intentions)

Perfected in the wisdom of the Cross,
accompany us and all people
in every distress of body and soul.

Our Father…
Hail Mary…
Glory be…

Saint Edith Stein, pray for us.
