Brick tramways at the entrance to the former stables of the Glasgow and South Western Railway on Bell Street in Glasgow. Built around 1900, the tramways allowed cartwheels to move more smoothly over the otherwise cobbled stable yard. I've come across tramways made from granite slabs elsewhere in the city, but so far these are the only brick ones I've found.

Abandoned railway bridge over the River Kelvin in Glasgow. This sort of thing always gives me post-apocalyptic survival vibes.

This method of getting trains up the steep incline out of Queen Street Station continued until 1908 when cable-hauling was finally replaced by banking engines. The Avon Viaduct still forms part of the mainline route between Glasgow and Edinburgh to this day, more than 160 years after it was first built.

The Avon Viaduct near Linlithgow. With over 20 arches and 404 metres in length, this viaduct was built in 1841 as part of Scotland's first intercity railway line connecting Haymarket Station in Edinburgh with Queen Street Station in Glasgow. A series of such viaducts, as well as embankments and tunnels, allowed the creation of an almost flat route between the two cities.

After this event, the tunnel was sealed and a large gravel barrier was placed in front of it to stop this happening again. In the thirty years since this flood, the gravel barrier has gradually settled to the point where it is now barely noticable and if the Kelvin were to breach the same retaining wall today, the same type of event would most likely be repeated.

Then in December 1994, the River Kelvin burst through a retaining wall just north of this entrance, sending a torrent of water through the tunnel. It eventually emerged a few miles further south, where it flooded the still-operational Exhibition Centre station before flowing across the SEC carpark and cascading into the Clyde. It took many months for the Argyle Line between Partick and Glasgow Central to re-open once more.

The entrance to an abandoned railway tunnel leading beneath Kelvingrove Park in the West End of Glasgow. Once part of a line built by Caledonian Railways in the 1890s, it closed in the 1960s. The tunnel remained open for anyone to explore until the early 1990s.

Within a few decades of the bridge being built, railway lines like this one would outcompete canals as a means of freight transport, and in the 1960s the canal was finally closed.

By the 1980s this railway line, too, had closed as the industrial businesses it once served also disappeared.

Much of the canal has now been re-opened, but the bridge is pretty much all that's left of this particular railway line.

End of the Line: This swing bridge was built across the Forth and Clyde Canal at Port Dundas in Glasgow around 1890 to allow trains on the Caledonian Railway's Port Dundas line to cross it and so serve potential industrial freight customers at Speirs Wharf and Port Dundas itself.

Just to the south of this viaduct once stood the twelve sheds of the Saint Enoch Locomotice Depot, which was open between 1855 and 1930. The sheds themselves were finally demolished in the 1970s.

The remains of the railway viaduct running parallel to Osborne Street in Glasgow. This once carried trains from Bellgrove in the east end to the grand Saint Enoch Station in the city centre. Run by the City of Glasgow Union Railway, it formed part of the Saltmarket Junction which operated from 1882 until 1966.

The remains of an old railway bridge over the River Kelvin just east of the Kelvin Aquaduct in Maryhill, Glasgow.

This bridge would have originally carried the Caledonian Railway line coming from Anniesland and heading east to eventually join up with the section of line which ran under the Botanic Gardens and Kelvingrove Park on its way to the city centre.

In December 1994, the River Kelvin was in full spate and broke through its retaining wall just upstream from here. The water flowed through this tunnel before emerging to engulf the Exhibition Centre Station, flood the car park of the Exhbition Centre itself and finally cascade into the Clyde. In the aftermath of this event, this entrance was sealed up.
