Diuris orientis (eastern donkey orchid / wallflower orchid) variations growing together near Mallacoota, East Gippsland, VIC.

Didn't see a lot of even the typical coloured form this spring with dry conditions maybe cutting the flowering season a little shorter than better years? The all yellow flowering forms are always more uncommon - but only saw the one single plant anywhere this year.

Waxlip orchid ((Glossodia / Caladenia major) with sundew (Drosera sp. - probably D. auriculata) near Mallacoota, East Gippsland, VIC.

Lots of both sundews and orchids out here in coastal heathland heading into spring - but hot/dry weather since then has seen both suffer a bit in recent weeks.

Really nice compact pale blue form of Thelymitra ixioides (spotted sun orchid) in heathland near Genoa, East Gippsland, VIC.

Several of these plants with small flowers (and only three per plant) plus almost no spots were growing together on one side of the track with more typical forms (larger / bluer / more spotted flowers just starting to open) on the other side of the track. Tip of my little finger here for scale.

Spotted donkey orchid (Diuris maculata) with flower spider near Gipsy Point, East Gippsland, VIC. Almost all of the Diuris orchids at this location host one of these very small spiders hoping to dine out on the insects attracted by the flowers.

There was an excess of gorgeousness on display, & so many lovely plants I wanted to bring home - I had to restrain myself.

I finally met one of the nursery owners that I have bought from online & by phone previously. It's nice to be able to put a face to the name/voice. He remembered my name (& posting plants to me) too, which surprised me.

Hubby is less keen on indoor plants, but he thoroughly enjoyed going round the RHS garden in the afternoon. We should go earlier in the year - although the autumn colours were lovely, so much had died back ready for winter.

This is Bratonia Charles M Fitch Izumi. The petals are a pale green with brown markings, and it has a large pink/lilac lip. It's gently coloured, but still manages to be remarkably eye-catching. It's strongly scented, too. A lovely sweet fragrance, which fills the whole room.A Vanda orchid in shades of pirple and lilac, with 'spots' on the lilac petals. This is Phalaenopsis Emily. It's a lovely mix of pinks, whites and splashes of a deep reddish/purple around the edge of the petals. There a lots of buds still to open. It doesn't have the usual phalaenopsis lip, which makes it interesting as well as beautiful.

As expected, I thotoughly enjoyed my day at the Orchid Show. I bought more than I should have - but fewer than I wanted to.
The plant that hubby was most taken with lost a couple of flowers on the way home, but these things happen - there are more to come (& if I can keep it going until next year we will have a real treat).
Here are a couple of images of plants from the show. One of these plants came home with us - the other was (sadly) not for sale 🙁 . Ah well! There's always next year!

We also spent a couple of hours enjoying the very beautiful RHS gardens & getting a few ideas for our much smaller garden.

This is a Zygopetalum orchid. The petals are green & brown, and the lip is a striking shade of purple. And it's also very strongly scented, a lovely sweet fragrance.
The photo doesn't do it justice. This gorgeous flower rejoices in the name "Amazing Thailand Rainbow", which fits it to perfection. The fragrance was amazing, too.

A range of interesting variations in the small pink/white Caladenias are out again this spring near the Genoa River, VIC. More typical examples of C. carnea, C. fuscata and C. pusilla all occur nearby but there are always some smaller single-flowering forms that kind of fit imperfectly somewhere in this mix ...

Diuris orientis (eastern donkey orchid / wallflower orchid) completely yellow flowering variation near Mallacoota, East Gippsland, VIC.

Yellow flowering forms of this widespread species are fairly uncommon and often only appear in the next spring after summer fires - before plants apparently revert back to more typical reddish orange colours in subsequent seasons. Only the one plant of any colour out at this location (which I'm pretty sure hasn't had fires since 2020?)

Small single shelf greenhouse with 3 paphiopedilum henryanums and good old dendrobium Purple Splash. Miniature bulldog paphs in bud are on the left, back and front.

A small shelf greenhouse with clear plastic instead of glass and grow lights at the top. Inside are two slipper orchids in bloom, one with two blooms. They have deep pink slippers and spotted top petals. To their left is a taller orchid , a dendrobium with small flowers, white splashed with a bright pinkish purple. There are two other healthy looking small orchid plants with no visible blooms.

Interesting tall leek orchid (Prasophyllum elatum) form with green stems and green / yellow flowers near Mallacoota, East Gippsland, VIC. Just a few scattered plants flowering this year surrounded by large numbers of the more common black-stemmed forms - but with almost no intergrades.

Tiny orchid flowers!
Honestly, I think they are a bit underwhelming compared to the leaves (see toot above) but they are cute nevertheless.

My Petiole Macodes (a green jewel orchid) in a white pot on a white shelf photographed from the side. There is a Ludisia discolor (a brown jewel orchid) next to it on the shelf, i.e. behind it in the picture. The leaves are green, they have an amazing pattern and they sparkle. Two of the branches of the orchid are flowering. The flowers are growing from two tall stem that have a warm, brown color. The flowers have overall the same color as the stem and they are tinny (smaller than my thumb nail).Close up on the flowers. There are four open flowers and a bud in the picture. The petals are a bit hairy and bent downwards and the dorsal sepal (the upper leave in the middle) seems to be missing. The other two sepals and the lip are pointy, slim and close together. The middle part has a creamy white color.
There are some leaves of my Ludisia discolor in the background (very blured) and the rest of the background is white.
