"Portuguese Woman (The Large Portuguese)," Robert Delaunay, 1916.
Delaunay (1885-1941) was a French painter who started as a Post-Impressionist, then founded the Orphism movement, before moving on to Abstract art. Such was the lot of an artist in the turbulent early years of the 20th century!
Today we have an example from his Orphist years. Orphism is an offshoot of Cubism, and focuses on bright colors and images broken into geometric shapes. Many Orphists use the motif of the circle with colorful concentric rings, as you see here.
Delaunay was certainly breaking things down here, but it's still recognizable as a human figure with some tropical plants, but what she's carrying is unclear. Still, this painting is about the colors and shapes more than it's telling a story. Orphism pretty much died during WWI, and afterwards Abstraction became popular.
From the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, Madrid.
Going to see the Orphism exhibition at the Guggenheim this week.

"Nude Woman Reading," Robert Delaunay, 1915.
Delaunay (1885-1941) was one of the founders of Orphism, a short-lived style of art that was a bridge between Cubism and Abstract Art.
He didn't do many nudes, but he painted nine variations on this scene with varying degrees of abstraction. This is pretty representational; although she's fairly abstract, we get enough with her hair and the fat rolls on her side that make her seem genuine and real. The oval framing of the painting accentuates her curve. And the bold colors are definitely Delaunay; he loved experimenting with color and hue.
This is technically a sort of semi-abstract, but nicely captures a moment alone when a woman, either dressing or un-, is taken by something on the page before her.
From the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne.

Sonia Delaunay, born as Sarah Ilinitchna Stern on November 14, 1885, in Gradizhsk, Ukraine, and later known for her innovative contributions to art and design, was a trailblazer who shaped the trajectory of 20th-century modernism. Throughout her career,
#AlbertGleizes merged Cubism's fragmented forms with the vibrant energy of the city. His 1917 work "On Brooklyn Bridge" captures the bridge’s architectural brilliance through bold diagonals and dynamic orbs, reflecting Orphism’s focus on modernity.
See it in our exhibition "Harmony and Dissonance: Orphism in Paris, 1910-1930" opening November 8. #OrphismGuggenheim

Been thinking about Orphic asceticism today:
I don't think the point of asceticism in Orphism is to reject "worldly pleasures" because they're bad or "sinful." Aside from a few explicit prohibitions, most of which are common sense (ex. no murder or cannibalism), the ascetism in Orphism isn't really about complete rejection or total renunciation at all.
Instead, the point is to eliminate the "distractions" that veil our inner, Divine nature. The point is to reduce excessive preoccupation, obsession, greed, untempered lust, and violent rage. It's more about self-control and discipline instead of denial and self-mortification.
Thoughts?
"Rythme," Sonia Delaunay, 1938.
Delaunay (1886-1979) was a Ukrainian/French artist and designer who was a co-founder of the Orphist movement, an offshoot of Cubism that focused on geometric shapes and bright colors, of which this is a perfect example.
In a link with a recent image I posted, her inspiration for Orphic art was her crafting of a patchwork quilt for her infant son. She just clipped bright cloth into shapes and patched them together as her instinct drew her. Hurrah for quilting!
Her husband died of cancer in 1941, but she went on to be a respected and celebrated artist. She was the first living woman artist to have a retrospective at the Louvre in 1964, and was named an officer of the French Legion of Honor in 1975.
From the Musée National d'Art Moderne, Paris, which I visited in 1980 and I may have seen this with my own eyes, but don't remember.

As I have been becoming more consistent in both spirituality and ideology, I have finally bitten the bullet and had what will likely be my last meat-based meal yesterday. I could simply no longer justify it against my own move towards orphism, consistent anarchism, and rising meat prices in the area.
Seems I'm having a lot of exciting changes this year.
If you want your mind blown, read the myths of #Dionysus/#Zagreus not as though they’re simply “the god of wine,” but as the deity of all kinds of #fermentation. Sure, wine, but also sauerkraut, sourdough bread, yogurt: these foods and the microbes that produce them are all Dionysian. Change my mind. #orphism #hellenism #greek
