Our cold snap has passed, with coldest temperatures reaching -20C/-5F, and now high temperatures are expected to remain above freezing for at least the next two weeks. (Indeed, we are forecast to see 10C/50F on Friday.)

So the newspaper-and-black-plastic protective covering has come off the Japanese false holly (Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Goshiki'). The plants appear to have survived the cold, but time will tell. If there is damage, the leaves will turn yellow then brown, indicating the stem has died in that part of the plant. But I hope the plants suffer no ill effects at all from the extreme cold of early last week.

Japanese false holly (Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Goshiki') plants are in a bed with snow covering much of the soil. The spiky leaves of the small bushes are variegated green and yellow.

And so I have covered the Japanese false holly plants with crumpled newspaper and black plastic garbage bags, weighted down with stones, in the hope that keeping the plants covered and protected from any wind will allow the temperatures surrounding the plants to remain warm enough to prevent any damage.

From the experience of similarly cold temperatures around Christmas two years ago, I am fearful for my Japanese false holly (Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Goshiki'). Two years ago, much of its foliage and stems were killed by these temperatures. The plants have grown back, though with a lower habit than before.

There are actually 3 varieties of 'mokusei' (木犀 'sweet olives'): kinmokusei (金木犀 osmanthus fragrans var. aurantiacus), the less fragrant ginmokusei (銀木犀 osmanthus fragrans var. fragrans), and the much less common usugimokusei (薄黄木犀 osmanthus fragrans var. thunbergii).

Kinmokusei is the most common of the 3 kinds of 'mokusei'.

So, I went to an interesting artisan's market that's opened for the first time this year in Wuhan. It was small, as any such new markets tend to be, but it had a few fun things in it.

Among the fun things was this can of beer. That I got for free by rolling another can of beer across a mat and having it land in the most expensive slot. For the contest you were given three tries, but I nailed it on the first.

At home I stuck it in the freezer to quickly chill it and then poured it. It forms a decent head, but that doesn't last long. The flavour … I usually don't like flavoured beers. The local, popular pineapple beer is anathema to me, and the one that's flavoured with what seems to be vanilla cake icing is downright repulsive.

But this one? It's really, really nice. To the point that I'm going to track down the supplier and order a case.

Some garden updates:

Japanese false holly (Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Goshiki') is recovering nicely, though the plant at the top of this photo was more severely damaged by the -7F/-23C temperature at Christmas than the plant seen at front. New growth has emerged on the bottom of both plants. Assuming no further winter damage in the next few years, we shall wait and see what shape the bushes end up forming.
