Persnickety

Drip, drip, down on the dormer. Forest echoes drizzle on a lonely toadstool. Drop on the stained hood, drip on the chimney, drop on the lantern beaming through the beeches, drip on the doorknob, drop. Persnickety on a misty morning; tears against stained glass. For all fungi must fade when water has vaporized like life barely adjusting to the light and then disappearing forever; ne'er to be found again.

#promptodon  Gayle’s gran called her #persnickety for her odd ways. Always needing a specific cup and plate, certain colored clothes on specific days, not eating yellow food. Anyone watching knew it was OCD. Especially when they saw Gayle’s tears of frustration. Gran would dry her tears, hug her and say, “well Gayle, you have to relax your rules a bit. Be kinder to yourself.”  Little by little, with love and belief, she was kinder to herself and everyone else. And the kindness was returned.

"Kelvins Belt! Would you look at that? Ever seen a plant house before, Lem?"
"That's a mushroom, Phil."
"Exactly!"
"No, I mean a mushroom isn't a plant is it?"
"'Course it is. My Ma's veggie stew was full of mushrooms."

Mist flooded the forest, flowing between the trees. It felt heavy in Alyse's lungs. This wasn't a normal fog, it was laced with magic. She had to escape or she would suffocate. A red light beckoned in the distance. She drew nearer, a quaint cottage carved from a giant mushroom swam into view. Alyse knocked.
"Please." She begged the pixie that answered "I can't breathe."
"You humans." The pixe smiled. "So persnikety." Alyse didn't trust her grin, but had no other choice.

Kane's research suggested that the next artifact was in this mushroom hut. The inhabitants didn't consider it of much value, but would only trade with people who could match their trivia knowledge about the local fungi. Armed with a mere week of study at Mistfall, Kane introduced himself to the persnickety mycologists; even if he failed their test, he thought he could talk long enough to scope out the interior for a later breaking and entering.

A mushroom the size of a cramped 2-story hut is in the middle of a foggy forrest. The mushroom has an orange cap and a grey base. The base has a brown wooden door and a window, and the cap has a chimney and another window. There is a lit lantern hanging from a hook next to the door. A wooden, elevated walkway goes past the hut, and 2 people walk along it, going away from the camera.
