Also #oldComputerChallenge happening RIGHT NOW https://screwlisp.small-web.org/occ/25/jul15.txt (I'm doing #xemacs emacs)
LambdaCalculus knows #emacs #lisp ...! And that's where it began then #commonLisp #CCL on the #macintosh
Is this the mini-successor of the #PirateBox ?

@lambdacalculus @TheSlugNoodle love it!
I’d started on my own #piratebox ish thing last year, based on a Raspberry Pi Zero (hoping to make some time to get it into a more presentable/working state and share it somewhere).
But I’d love to try building one (or more) of these — seems like using an ESP32 means they’d be cheaper to make several and plant them all over the place
I got a B00KM4RK built and testing! Big shout out to fellow townie @TheSlugNoodle for designing the idea and helping keep the spirit of the #PirateBox alive and kicking, and for sending some hardware to me!
The B00KM4RK is an ESP32 board with a small web server stack, and lets people grab and leave text files and books, and has a tiny forum included as well!
I'm gonna have a couple at both #DC33 and #HOPE_16 to show off, but everyone give Slugnoodle a 🤘because he's an awesome dude!
:boost_ok: Does anyone have the full #specifications for IrDA #archived somewhere?
Because I'm looking for a good, short-range protocol that is less complex than #LiFi * for a "digital dead drop".
Most notably because USB dead drops have a shitton of disadvantages as #USB is not designed for that in mind, is extrenmely susceptible to sabotage and vandalism as a #PirateBox *, less complex than #FreedomBox * for #Sneakernet * operations.
Given the IrDA spec is relatively simple on the physical interface, reimplementing it with visible light would allow for more options espechally when it comes to "broadcasting" data to multiple devices when #datacasting like #Toosheh * would be overkill...
Hi @yunohost I'm gonna be giving talks on reviving the #PirateBox project and I've experimented with Yunohost as the software platform for it, and I find it to be easy to set up and accessible enough for others to build their own! Would you be cool with all the shout outs and mentions at any future talks?
@petergleick In a dystopia where Wikipedia is outlawed we can combine that with PirateBox (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PirateBox) and spread Raspberry Pis around, each with a 256GB sd card (and still have much room left on it, even with images).
La #piratebox existe........ Et est créée par un gars à fond dans les cryptomonnaies 😒 évidemment il a bien bien ancré ça dans le projet, pas étonnant que personne n'en parle
@bigzaphod Actually, thinking about it, maybe a dead-drop-style system bringing messageboards back to their roots (something like the #PirateBox) where it's a WiFi captive-portal HTML site not actually on the web???... This feels like an idea from @ajroach42, doesn't it? I probably accidentally stole it from him.....
@Sonikku subvert that facist bs with some #PirateBox and ither #WirelessDataDrops arould the vicinity...
@KeithDJohnson how about giving the people who make these laws, enforce these laws and put up these stickers a middle finger instead?
#WhatsMissing: #wireless #DataDeadDrops like the #PirateBox being scattered around #playgrounds, #schools and other places - ideally with permission of tennants/owners so regulators can do jack shit about those!

I did a talk at Hack Manhattan on May 18th for their Open Hacker Consortium on the Pirate Box and how it may be utilized in positive ways for marginalized folks and communities! :pirate_flag:

After reading @benbrown's LIBRARY again in print, alls I gotta say is that I would absolutely love to have a library like that and be able to help people find the good stuff! Maybe I'm in the wrong line of work as it is!
But it's also inspiring me to push for reviving the #PirateBox project again and getting it to be a DC212 project! We could help nurture and grow the project around the city and beyond! :hackers_town:
In short...
Gemini serves plain text in a modern way.
Text is served as line, some lines are specials and can be: links, headers, quotes or bullets.
To render each line you need only the first three characters, for instance this is a link: =>
Since rendering lines is easy, GemText is organically displayed properly on every device and client. You don't need extra rules as in CSS/HTML.
Gemini is static, uses TLS self certificates and it is privacy oriented.
Gemini can serve any media file, although it is not suited for very large file or streaming. With Gemini you always know when a connection is opened and closed.
Gemini pages are nice to read everywhere but #Lagrange (both desktop and android) makes Gemini shining.
https://geminiprotocol.net/
https://github.com/skyjake/lagrange
The low resources required to run a Gemini server, and the general low overhead and bandwidth involved, makes Gemini a very good choice for projects like the #LibraryBox and the #PirateBox!

A little teaser of a talk I'm doing for #DC212 tomorrow about the #PirateBox project and how we're reviving the idea. In this day and age, I think we need to bring this project back to the forefront more than ever! :pirate_flag:
C'est qui les successeurs de la #piratebox ?
J'aimerai bien balader un truc comme ça aux install party ou quand je me pointe en médiathèque.
@rmgr yes, I’m falling down it again too.
On one hand I like the idea of something with a powerful, reliable Wi-Fi radio (maybe even hardware specifically designed to be an access point).
Otoh small, cheap devices are interesting if you can “mesh them out” so signal strength isn’t as important.
On the software side it’s got me thinking about how we could build a global virtual library on #veilid , accessible via both regular computing devices and via #piratebox style sharing to reach as many people as possible.
@osiux #piratebox <3 ? Or why so many 3020s? #curious ! #openwrt
