We have known how to do this for a long time, if I am to believe my recent (and very well-documented) reading of James Bridle's "All the World's Intelligence". Simply put, until now, an external "analogue" system was needed to achieve this, as with Ernie.

I find this subject fascinating, but I'm too bad at maths to really understand it.
