My #stylus just gave up on me. Just to make sure: I’m talking about the #needle of my #recordplayer here.
It’s quite apparent in the sound: noisy as if the distortion got turned up a notch. When I asked a friend how to tell if it is broken, he said you’ll know. Now I know 😞

Does anyone have a tip for a good stylus? MC preferably. When I bought my player it came with a #DynaVector 10x5. I really liked this one, so if you know of anything like this, let me know.

Got most of the pot metal out of the #CylinderPlayer horn. Yeah I can still see some way in there, but it's far enough back I don't think it'll cause any problems. I test-fitted the reproducer off of my other (working) Amberola model 30 and things seem to be good.

This is a job for a #DremelTool, with a grinding attachment. Eventually I switched to a bigger one.
Notice the safety equipment. Goggles and earplugs. The point of a horn is to amplify sound, and if you're grinding metal out of the small end, a really loud noise is going to come out of the other end! I also stuffed some paper towels in there to dampen that.
Also: This white metal is called "pot metal"--as in, the factory dumped all their scraps into a pot and melted it. That probably includes *lead* so be careful. I wore a mask too (the kind to prevent the spread of covid). And do this as far as you can from anywhere that might involve stuff you eat. And wash your hands afterwards.
After a bit of grinding, I tried various random handy things around the workshop to try to break up the metal, but it was mostly just grinding.

Project for today: This is the horn of the #CylinderPlater I'm working on. This is an internal horn machine; the horn attaches to the back of the reproducer (the thingie with the stylus and a diaphragm to make sound) and curves around and hangs from a spring inside the machine, behind a grille. (External horns tend to be brass and shiny, but internal ones are hidden and just painted black).
This one has the rear extension ("tailpipe") of the reproducer broken off inside.
Fixing the reproducer is a project for later. For now, I just need to get that broken-off bit of metal tubing out. And it's pretty stuck.

This #CylinderPlayer is going to need a bit of TLC, but it seems to be complete.
Noticed something odd about how the horn seems to connect to the reproducer. Usually the reproducer has a tube out the back that goes into the small end of the horn. In this one, there was a small tube coming out of the horn. It was easy to remove... I think long ago, the tube from the reproducer broke off in the horn, and someone came up with a creative solution to keep it working. I'll try to do something more standard and replace the reproducers "tailpipe".
