Does everyone know "the 5W's and sometimes How"?

This is a simple checklist used in #journalism, and refers to six questions every #news article should answer, and the first 5 should be answered in the lede:

  • Who?
  • What?
  • Where?
  • When?
  • Why?
  • How?

These questions help identify key details regarding an event, and #reporting about it.

New in European Science Editing: Nearly 1/2 of health sciences journals in South Africa don't mention statistics in their instructions for authors or make cursory references. Gina Joubert concludes that editors & publishers must give more detail on reporting requirements for statistical methods in quantitative research articles.

South African-based health sciences journals' author instructions regarding reporting and presentation of statistical analyses

Gina Joubert

"Nearly half of SA-based health sciences journals made no mention or only a general statement regarding statistical analyses and presentation in the instructions to authors, and few mention any EQUATOR guideline. Journal editors need to consider the existing guidelines and how best to incorporate key items into their instructions for authors so that authors and reviewers adhere to good practice standards which are not journal-specific, and readers see material that adheres to good practice standards."

Glad to join #STI2023 in Leiden this year!

I'll bring an analysis of academic age of users of #ReportingGuidelines, especially PRISMA for #SystematicReviews.

Why academic age? --> Time in the field and level of experience may be correlated to what you write.
Check out my short analysis:

Routine outcome data are a valuable source of evidence.

Using the REporting of studies Conducted using Observational Routinely-collected health Data statement this finds that the reporting quality was largely not great:

The use of will not improve the study (if only used at writing stage). But readers will be in a much better position to understand the research!

"Concerns persist regarding tactics that some authors continue to use (knowingly or unknowingly) in order to get their trial reports into the publication pipeline. We are disappointed that these highly questionable practices continue. In some cases, we are dealing with quite blatant inaccuracies." - Jane Noyes, Journal of Advanced Nursing

Sex and gender differences are often overlooked in research design, implementation, and scientific reporting.

The EASE SAGER Guidelines Checklist helps address this with a comprehensive series of items to incorporate into methods and editorial processes.

Hey hey, a book to which I contributed won a prize!

Book: Finding Your Seat at the Table: Role for Librarians on Institutional Regulatory Committees and Boards, edited by Susan Harnett and Maria Cantwell (who were GREAT)

My chapter (written with Melissa Funaro): "Introduction to #ReportingGuidelines used in animal research: effectiveness and advocacy"

My confession: I have no idea what the author agreement said about self-archiving, nor can I find the contract. #LibrarianOrganizeThyself

The same principle applies to physical materials, for which a catalogue number and batch number should be reported if available.

Social.Coop members, remember that in addition to our code of conduct there are #ReportingGuidelines that explain how we hope members will resolve disagreements or address concerns. git.coop/social.coop/community

As a public health librarian I often recommend a #reporting guideline related to the topic or methods of a library user's research -- but I've never had cause to look into #cost-effectiveness #ReportingGuidelines till now. Well, thanks to the Equator Network, I see there is some guidance:
Sanders et al 2016. Recommendations for Conduct, Methodological Practices, and Reporting of Cost-effectiveness Analyses: Second Panel on Cost-Effectiveness in Health and Medicine. JAMA doi.org/10.1001/jama.2016.1219

In addition to the #CodeofConduct, the #ReportingGuidelines also passed.

The RG have serious gaps and problems (see discussion on Matrix and Loomio) -- they were intended to be filled out by the CWG. So their approval should probably be taken as approval of a kind of general orientation: "let's have conflict resolution and a reporting system for abuse" instead of a procedure.

It would be great to fix them quickly and propose a new version for approval. pad.disroot.org/p/Social.Coop_
