Since I was already running Mosquitto as #MQTT broker, I flashed #OpenMqttGateway on an #ESP32 module with a 433MHz receiver and got myself a non-smart weather station.
Alternately you could use #RTL433 and an #RTLSDR dongle to receive the data (or data from your neighbors weather stations).

My station is from LaCrosse, but there are other supported brands.

@sashag @Hex Re: Police radios, those are less useful to listen to.

• But it's useful to to passive SIGINT re: their radio frequencies as #TETRA is basically a weird flavoured #GSM remix and thus the known direct PTT and Uplink frequencies are passively recievable and scannable with like a (pair of) #RTLSDR(s).

  • It'll allow guesstimating distance to the next digital radio that is turned on, thus the closest police officer on foot and/or patrol car/motorcycle..

#NotLegalAdvice but merely detecting a transmission is not considered illegal eavesdropping in most juristictions, espechally if one doesn't crack or decode the actual comms.

• And since this is completely passive there's no way for the police to be able to detect this nor counteract it unless they were to raid every potential location and refuse to use any radios whatsoever.

  • Cuz OFC the same #SIGINT applies even to classic, analog #PTT radios!

Mensch sollte vielleicht keine #Zivilstreife abdrängeln und anpampen.

Ist ja auch nicht so als seien die schlecht als solche erkennbar:

• Auffällig unauffälliges Modell (obere Mittelklasse)
• Mittlere bis dunkle Fahrzeugfarbe (silber, grau, schwarz)
• 5-Türer Limosine, meist mit Kombiheck.
• Zwei Erwachsene auf der Vorderbank.
• Keine Kinder und fast nie andere Personen auf der Rückbank.
• Extrem ordentliche Fahrweise, großzügiger Abstand, ruhiges Anfahren und Abbremsen.
• Dashcam vorn und hinten.
• Sehr sauberes Fahrzeug, quasi immer wie frisch gewaschen.
• Tragen eigentlich immer Schtzweste unter Shirt und ne 9x19mm Pistole entweder rücklings verdeckt oder seitlich geholstert.
• Wenn keine Trageweste mit Funkgerät, dann meist mit Earpiece verdeckt verkabelt.

Und natürlich das offensichtlichste:

• TETRA-Fahrzeugfunkgerät welches auf [380-385MHz] konstant sendet, weil #TETRA ist nen verbasteltes GSM...

Deshalb kommen SEK'ler auch im #Mietwagen (Hier #Europcar) und schalten auf Einkanal-Direktbetrieb um, weil sonst würde jeder Vollpfosten mit nem #RTLSDR die von weitem detektieren...

Yay, my ACARS receiver is working again after replacing the powered USB hub.

ps. dirty or clouded windows on the outside of a plane, although not a safety hazard or anything, are a great annoyance to me. You're at 35,000 feet and there's a SMUDGE on that window and you want to take a picture of something....

Apparently toasted a powered USB hub running my SDRs... (36W hub...). Going for a slightly more reputable 60W hub manufacturer to see if it lasts longer. #sdr #rtlsdr

A very interesting use for those #rtlsdr #sdr dongles: Listen to what your heat cost allocators, water meters etc. are talking all day. And graph it.
Hint: They're really chatty.
And the stuff is surprisingly easy to setup with cheap dongles, i.e. former #DVB-T/ #DAB dongles.

And what is even more impressive: Those little things can do proper #AES...who would've thunk.

Nice, the #rtlsdr dongle came in today. It is recognised by the software on the #raspberrypi so that looks promising.

The (indoor) antenna is expected to arrive tomorrow, so no #ADSb tracking just yet.

Das sieht doch schonmal ganz gut aus. Besonders cool ist, dass auf der Karte nach einer Weile die Abdeckung angezeigt wird. Da unser Arbeitszimmer nach Norden ausgerichtet ist, ergibt das auch halbwegs Sinn. Feeder für ADSB-Exchange fehlt noch.

Fixed one of my SDR (software defined radio banks. This is a giant heat sink, salvaged probably from some kind of scientific equipment or a stereo. Drilled some holes, used both double sided thermal tape and zip ties to attach. (Previously tried just the tape, which detaches when it gets hot. 🤔). Previously used for satellite monitoring, currently being used for ACARS. Could probsbly do both. #sdr #rtlsdr #hamradio #aviation

I wanted to check out #Meshtastic in my area, before I buy any Meshtastic compatible #LoRa hardware. With the [meshtastic_sdr](https://gitlab.com/crankylinuxuser/meshtastic_sdr) project it is possible to receive Meshtastic data with an #RTLSDR dongle. It comes as a #GNURadio flow and a Python script to decode the messages into readable text. You can even decode all Meshtastic presets at the same time. Awesome project!

Aww man, I just learned that NOAA's #POES satellites were fully decommissioned in August. I've been collecting weather images with an #RTLSDR dongle for years and was just trying to figure out why I hadn't received updates in awhile. Sad to see them go, I guess I'll have to take down my antenna now.
