Smurf-tastic News! The Smurfs return to Welsh screens after 25 Years
For the first time in a quarter of a century, everyoneâs favourite three-apples-high mischief-makers are returning to Welsh television screens, with S4C announcing the return of Y Smyrffs âthis time with a fresh coat of paint, new voices, but the same iconic blue heart.
The little blue legends whoâve entertained children (and more than a few nostalgic grown-ups) for generations are smurfing their way back into our homes â this time speaking the language of the land of song.
Y Smyrffs, as theyâre affectionately known in Welsh, will reintroduce familiar faces like Smyrffen (Smurfette), the wise Tada Smyrff (Papa Smurf), and the not-so-lovely villain Craca Hyll (Gargamel), all with brand-new Welsh voices to bring their magical world to life.
Visitors to the Urdd Eisteddfod Dur a MĂ´r, were treated to an exclusive preview of the first two episodes â Trwyn a Hanner (Who Nose?) and Y Robot Magu (Diaper Daddy) delighting viewers, young and old.
Born from the brilliant pen of Belgian cartoonist Peyo in 1958, The Smurfs have been a global phenomenon for over six decadesâscampering through comic books, animated series, blockbuster films, and childhood memories worldwide. Now, S4C say theyâre ready to charm a whole new generation of Welsh-speaking fans.
âThe Smurfs have always been about togetherness, community, and a splash of silliness,â said Sioned Geraint, S4Câs Content Commissioner â Children and Learners. âWeâre thrilled to bring these timeless characters back in Welsh, and we know that both kids and nostalgic parents will fall in love with Y Smyrffs all over again.â
The return ties in with the globally popular 2021 animated reboot currently airing on Nickelodeon and streaming on platforms like Netflix. And with the buzz surrounding the recently announced Smurfs movieâstarring none other than Rihanna as Smurfette, and smurfing into cinemas in July 2025âSmurfmania is officially back in style.
Expect to see all the familiar blue faces: Peniog (Brainy Smurf, likely still annoying everyone with his âI told you so!â), Chwithig (Clumsy) tripping over himself into trouble, Horwth (Hefty) flexing his muscles at every opportunity, and of course, Tada Smyrff guiding the village with wisdom, patience, and the occasional magic potion. âAll you need is a little imagination⌠and a lot of smurfiness!â Tada Smyrff might sayâand heâd be right.
Fans of the original Welsh dub will be delighted to hear that many of the classic character names remain intact, offering a comforting dose of nostalgia. Smyrffen still sparkles with her trademark charm and curiosity, while Craca Hyll, with his cat Archalen in tow, continues his never-ending (and always failing) mission to catch a Smyrff.
VĂŠronique Culliford, President of the Peyo Company and the daughter of Pierre Culliford (aka Peyo), creator of the Smurfs said : âI am very proud of this upcoming launch on S4C. The local languages approach has always been central for us and this new release in Welsh-language will be the 50th language release for our TV series! Kids and parents along can already expect a lot of fun watching Y Smyrffs on S4C. Maeâr Smyrffs yn Ă´l!â
Whether you were glued to the TV with a bowl of cereal in the â80s or youâre introducing Y Smyrffs to your own children for the first time, thereâs something undeniably timeless about these pint-sized pranksters.
Each Smurf might look similar, but they each bring something special to the tableâteam spirit, loyalty, humour, and heart. And in todayâs world, that kind of smurfy magic is more welcome than ever.
So, grab your popcorn (or paned o de), switch on S4C, and get ready to say âShwmae!â to Y Smyrffs. Because whether youâre young, or just young at Smurf, thereâs always room for a little more blue in your day.
This is the full circle I was after!

This July marks a milestone for Welsh womenâs football, as the national team prepares to make its debut at a major tournament. Wales secured their place at the Euros after beating the Republic of Ireland 3-2 on aggregate in the tournamentâs play-offs.
Wales have been drawn in Group D. Their first game is against the Netherlands on Saturday 5 July at 17:00, then France on Wednesday 9 July at 20:00 before facing the reigning champions, Englandâs Lionesses, on Sunday 13 July at 20:00.
All matches will be broadcast live on S4C, S4C Clic, and BBC iPlayer.
BBC Wales will produce the UEFA Womenâs EURO 2025 live coverage for S4C.
Sioned Dafydd will front S4Câs coverage, along with expert analysis from Gwennan Harries Owain Tudur Jones, with Dylan Ebenezer and commentator Nic Parry completing S4Câs presenting team.
Geraint Evans, S4C Chief Executive, says: âIâm very pleased that S4C can show all of Walesâ matches in this yearâs UEFA Womenâs Euro 2025.
âWeâve seen a tremendous growth in the following for womenâs matches over the last few seasons in the Genero Adran Premier on S4C. Its great that fans will now be able to follow the national teamâs matches in the Euros in Welsh on S4C, the only channel where you can watch all of Walesâ matches.
âThere will be additional content across S4C platforms to accompany the competition, and we are looking forward to following and supporting Rhian Wilkinsonâs squad in a historic championship for our national team out in Switzerland.â
A spokesperson for the Football Association of Wales adds: âThe FAW is delighted that S4C will be broadcasting Cymruâs matches in this summerâs UEFA Womenâs EURO 2025 tournament.
âThe channelâs commitment to Welsh football ensures that the sport can be watched and supported through the Welsh language as Rhian Wilkinsonâs side hope to inspire the country when they make history with their first ever major tournament appearance.â

Former Labour minister named as Governmentâs preferred candidate for S4C Chair
Delyth started her career as a journalist at HTV Wales, working on the flagship current affairs programme âY Byd ar Bedwarâ for S4C. She subsequently worked as a reporter on BBC Radio Fourâs âWorld at Oneâ and âPMâ programmes.
She joined the Labour Party in 1984, later serving as an adviser to Labour leader John Smith from 1992 to 1994.
Labour selected her to stand in the 1999 National Assembly for Wales election as the second top-up candidate in the party list for the Mid and West Wales region, behind Welsh Labour leader Alun Michael. After Michaelâs resignation from the assembly in 2000, Evans automatically succeeded him as AM for Mid and West Wales.
She became deputy minister for Culture, Environment and Rural Affairs before retiring at the 2003 assembly election to spend more time with her family.
On the day of her announcement, two Welsh language campaigners from the Welsh Language Society were arrested for vandalising Evansâ constituency office in Llanelli and spraying it with black paint.
In 2013, she was selected as the Labour Partyâs candidate for the House of Commons constituency of Camarthen West and South Pembrokeshire at the 2015 general election, where she lost to Simon Hart of the Conservative Party.
After stepping down from politics Delyth worked in the charity sector as Chief Executive of Smart Works, a womenâs employment charity. Delyth is currently a Board member at Sport Wales, a Governor at Coleg Gwent, and a trustee of the Alacrity Foundation and the Urdd.
Delyth will now appear on 23 April before MPs on the Welsh Affairs Select Committee for pre-appointment scrutiny.
This process for appointing the Chair of S4C is set out in the Broadcasting Act 1990.
Ministers were assisted in their decision-making by an Advisory Assessment Panel which included a departmental official and a senior independent panel member approved by the Commissioner for Public Appointments. The Welsh Government and UK Government Wales office were also represented on the Panel.
UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said: âDelyth began her career as a broadcast journalist, and her vision for S4Câs future reflects a deep understanding of the Welsh cultural and media landscape, as well as an enduring commitment to public service.
âIâm pleased to recommend her for the role of Chair, in which she will no doubt be a proud champion of Welsh-language broadcasting. This marks an exciting chapter for S4C as we develop plans to boost the job opportunities and growth potential of the creative industries in Wales and the rest of the UK.â
Secretary of State for Wales Jo Stevens said: âDelyth has a great track record in broadcasting and wealth of experience in public service to bring to the role of S4C Chair.
âS4C plays a pivotal role in Wales, sustaining and promoting the Welsh language and strengthening our unique identity and culture. The channel is a cornerstone of the strong creative sector in Wales which is vital for economic growth.â
The Chair of S4C receives a salary of ÂŁ40,000 per year for an average of two work days per week.
The former Welsh Conservative Senedd Leader Andrew RT Davies has raised concerns over the proposed appointment of ex-Labour Senedd Member Delyth Evans as the next Chair of S4C.
The decision follows the BBCâs appointment of the former Chief Executive of Plaid Cymru as its Director of Programming for BBC Wales.
Mr Davies said: âAppointing a former Labour politician to chair S4C will rightly raise eyebrows, especially following BBC Walesâ decision to appoint the former chief executive of Plaid Cymru as its Director of Programming.
âThe public expects impartiality from Welsh media, not political recycling.
âIf the Welsh media wants to be trusted, these cosy Cardiff Bay appointments need to stop.â.
Delyth is married to Ed Richards, the former chief executive of Ofcom. They have two children and live in Penarth.
Born in Cardiff, Delyth has spoken about âgrowing up in Carmarthenshireâ and describes herself as a âvery proud Welsh womanâ. In a speech in 2017 she said: âI donât really think of myself as being British other than when I need my passport.
âThe idea of Britishness doesnât really mean a great deal to me.
âOn the other hand, I have always believed that Wales is better off being part of the UKâ

24 Hours That Changed Wales
Richard Parks presents a series of short films about pivotal moments in Welsh history, in Welsh. It's fair to say that he doesn't do things by halves:
"Do you think itâs possible?" he asked. I wanted to say sure, just delay filming for a year and spend most of that year on an immersion course and youâll be fine.
"How long have we got?" I asked instead.
"Well, weâve already started, mate."
