There was a steam boiler ready to explode just six feet from her, and its name was Mrs Jenkins. And yet Veronica was sure she had played her game with such exquisite delicacy and deference it would be impossible for anyone to claim she had engineered the outcome.

“Books cannot teach you all that you need to know, Miss Clifford-Hughes,” said the vicar, placing his hand lightly upon her arm. “I would be quite delighted to instruct you in the subject.”

“Sir, you are too kind,” she said. “I could not possibly distract you from your duties.”

“Nonsense, I’m sure I can find an hour here or there.”

“I must defer to Mrs Jenkins, sir, she must make the final decision. She has my best interests at heart.”

“Put these on.” Mademoiselle Vionnet had two sets of pale cream, silk undergarments, one in each hand, but as Veronica and Polly reached for them, she pulled her hands back. “You have bathed?” They nodded. Vionnet let them take the clothes, and pulled more packages from the trunks.

Polly quickly pulled on the silk bloomers. “Where’s the rest, mademoiselle?”

Vionnet gave her a long look. “There is no ‘rest’.”

“But—”

“Whatever Margaine-Lacroix can do, Vionnet can do better.”

Veronica had no time to ask who that was before Polly cried out.

“We’re going to be naked!”

“You will be dressed by Vionnet!”

It seemed strange going out without Polly, but she descended the stairs, went through the ballroom, and out on to the patio. The sun was descending in the west, but the stones were still warm beneath her feet.

The air was sweet from the ranks of flowers, and there was a gentle breeze bringing the earthy smell of the Downs. The occasional bleating of sheep punctuated the constant birdsong.

She was not wearing outdoor shoes, she had no parasol, and she had no one to accompany her.

“If I am the lady of the house, there is no one to tell me what I should or should not do.”

“Except your British propriety,” said Vionnet behind her. “A rule for every occasion, and no occasion without its rules.”
