One postcard and one photo view of the Karnopp Home at 411 Elizabeth Street in Mishicot, Wisconsin.
This history of the home was written by Jim Sustman:
In 1903, G. L. Karnopp MD, of Kewaunee built a house and clinic on the corner of N. Rockway and Elizabeth Streets. The turn of the century had brought about the popularity of a style of house referred to as Victorian. This house was similar to the Hugo Holst House, which we featured in the last issue of the MAGIC newsletter. Both were of the Victorian style. These large, stately and ornately designed houses were popular throughout the nation and Mishicot was no exception. Dr. Karnopp had the house equipped with an operating room where he performed surgery.
Dr. Karnopps’ sister-in-law was Dr. Clara Moore of Kewaunee. Clara was also a doctor and practiced with Dr. Karnopp. Mishicot, for some time, was one of the few places in the country to have a female doctor. One of the first surgeries performed by Dr. Karnopp involved the amputation of the hand of August Plautz. After the surgery, Mr. Plautz spent time in the clinic where he received hospital care.
When Dr. and Mrs. Karnopp moved to Wautoma, Dr. C.J. Skwor purchased the house and used it as his residence, office and clinic. After Dr. Skwor’s death in 1958, Otto and Dorothy Schultz purchased the house from Dr. Skwors’ widow. The Lloyd Brouchoud family purchased it from Mr. and Mrs. Schultz in 1969 and continue to reside there today.
The house experienced some publicity in 1970 when a skeleton was found in a flower garden next to the house. Investigation by the sheriffs’ department revealed the skeleton belonged to Dr. C.J. Skwor and was a medical model used in his office in the house. It is assumed that sometime after his death, his wife disposed of it by burying it there.
