As it was a sunny bank holiday Monday, I did what generations of Glaswegians have done and headed 'doon the watter' to the Clyde Coast. Specifically I headed for Seamill Beach in West Kilbride where there's plenty of room for the dog to have a good run around, and the views out over the Clyde to Arran are pretty stunning.

A view over a golden sandy beach and crystal clear turquoise waters to a distant mountainous island.

Decided to spend the day getting blown away on the beach at Findhorn on the Moray Coast. The beach huts are fairly famous, and one or two are currently up for sale if you have a spare £30k. The beach itself is made up of large stones rather than sand, so the noise of the stones smashing on the shore is awesome on a fierce day like today.

A grainy black and white image of the famous Findhorn beach huts. These are wooden huts painted in different colors set right at the high water mark. The different colors show as different shades of grey, with a large white gull painted on the side of the nearest hut. The beach is made up of large stone shingle, waves crash onto the shore on a fierce windy day. Grey skies complete the scene.

Last night, the Aurora appeared over the north of Scotland. An almost full moon and plenty of cloud made photography conditions fairly difficult, but that’s part of the fun of Aurora photography. This shot looks north from the Black Isle towards the Cromarty Firth and Easter Ross.

A green Aurora appears over a dark hilly landscape in the north of Scotland. The Cromarty Firth reflects some of the green light whilst the lights of coastal towns provide some detail in the shadows. Clouds dominate the sky and the full moon provides plenty of light washing out some of the brightness of the Aurora. However, just above the clouds, a green Aurora shows through.

Whilst I wander along Irvine Beach most mornings, I tend to stick to the sand and the water’s edge. Just above the beach, sits a guardian whom I finally visited - the stone dragon of Irvine Beach. This shot faces inwards away from the coast as the dragon looks out to sea.

Being able to spend time in Glen Etive over the last few years has allowed me to discover various locations on the River Etive which most passersby tend to miss. This particular spot is fairly treacherous on a wet or icy day as the slick rock tries to push you towards the gorge. A good spot for long exposure photography though!

A cold day in autumn as the sun casts an orange glow on the landscape of Glen Etive. Tall mountains surround the scene with blurred clouds covering the sky. A gorge in slick black rock contain a fast flowing river after heavy rainfall. Bubble formed by a waterfall further upstream float by. As this is a long exposure image, the bubbles form long white streaks in the darkness of the river creating a sense of speed.

Buachaille By Moonlight

Under a full moon, Buachaille Etive Mòr appears under a mostly clear sky. This is a six minute exposure which causes the stars to appear as lines. Breaks in the lines are caused by clouds passing by.

The mountain, Buachaille Etive Mòr, sits with a snow covered peak under a dark blue night sky with some passing clouds. A full moon is in the sky, lighting the peak, however the moon does not appear in the image. There is sufficient light from the moon to bring out the detail in the rock of the mountain. Stars appear as lines in the night sky due to the length of the exposure time. Breaks in this lines also are present as passing clouds break up the starlight reaching the camera sensor.

Just south of Cuil Bay lies the island of Eilean Balnagowan. There is a small house on this island (of which I’m very jealous) and a very small anchorage (not sure if it’s available to the public) in which I’ve seen the odd sailboat. On this particular evening, the sun broke through a layer of cloud just before it set behind the mountains of the Morvern peninsula.

Golden beams of light are cast across the calm waters of Loch Linnhe on the west coast of Scotland. The sun breaks through a layer of cloud before it sets behind the Morvern peninsula. An island sits in the loch, silhouetted against the sunlight.

If you wander down the coast from Glencoe to Oban, you’ll drive along the side of Loch Linnhe. You’ll also pass Cuil Bay which has a spectacular view south down the coast. This image was shot just after sunset which allowed me to capture a band of golden light on the horizon just as it started to fade allowing the Milky Way to then dominate the night sky.
