A quotation from Ursula K. Le Guin

It’s like all the time I was working keeping house and raising the kids and making love and earning our keep I thought there was going to come a time or there would be some place where all of it came together. Like it was words I was saying, all my life, all the kinds of work, just a word here and a word there, but finally all the words would make a sentence, and I could read the sentence. I would have made my soul and know what it was for. But I have made my soul and I don’t know what to do with it. Who wants it?

Ursula K. Le Guin (1929-2018) American writer
Story (1995-11), “Ether, OR,” Isaac Asimov’s Science Fiction, Vol. 19

A quotation from Ray Bradbury

So while our art cannot, as we wish it could, save us from wars, privation, envy, greed, old age, or death, it can revitalize us amidst it all.

A quotation from Robert Louis Stevenson

If we are indeed here to perfect and complete our own natures, and grow larger, stronger, and more sympathetic against some nobler career in the future, we had all best bestir ourselves to the utmost while we have the time. To equip a dull, respectable person with wings would be but to make a parody of an angel.

Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) Scottish essayist, novelist, poet
Essay (1878-03), “Crabbed Age and Youth,” Cornhill Magazine, Vol. 38

A #question not enough people ask is whether or not the world and #society actually ought to be the way they are, whether or not there might actually be better ways of doing things, whether #traditions are #based in #evidence and #logic—or even #compassion and #dignity—and whether or not we can make life better.

The ultimate purpose of life is to live well—to pursue #wellbeing and #selfactualization. If we fail in this, we have wasted the most precious gift of all. #philosophy #epitaph #⚛️

A quotation from Candice Bergen

I used to believe that marriage would diminish me, reduce my options. That you had to be someone less to live with someone else when, of course, you have to be someone more.

I read somewhere that (beyond religious reasons) most of us are monogamous these days because we have low self worth and are selfish. We're afraid that introducing anyone else to the equation will introduce the possibility of being lesser than, and we believe that our partners pleasure should only ever come from us and us alone.

A quotation from Philip K. Dick

The authentic human being is one of us who instinctively knows what he should not do and, in addition, will balk at doing it. He will refuse to do it, even if this brings down dread consequences to him and those whom he loves. This, to me, is the ultimately heroic trait of ordinary people. They say “no” to the tyrant and they calmly take the consequences of this resistance. Their deeds may be small, and almost always unnoticed, unmarked by history. Their names are not remembered, nor did these authentic humans expect their names to be remembered. I see their authenticity in an odd way: not in their willingness to perform great heroic deeds, but in their quiet refusals to commit villainies. In essence, they cannot be compelled to be what they are not.

Philip K. Dick (1928-1982) American writer
Speech (1978) “How To Build A Universe That Doesn’t Fall Apart Two Days Later”

A quotation from Thoreau, Henry David:

«
Do what you love. Know your own bone; gnaw at it, bury it, unearth it, and gnaw it still. Do not be too moral. You may cheat yourself out of much life so. Aim above morality. Be not simply good, be good for something.

Imagine being the mother of children ages 3 and 5 and the cofounder of a tech startup with your husband, then happening across a billing statement for your mobile phones with hundreds of text messages revealing an affair between your husband and the 25-year-old nanny who watches your kids.

That story sticks with me today, from the speaker I introduced last night.

There are all kinds of "human factors" that affect our performance in our work.

She's turned lemons into lemonade, and shows us how we can do our best work by being our best selves.

I have always separated my sexual identity from everything else, hiding the parts of myself. I feel like this is born out of shame and conservative conditioning. Maybe I am just not for this world, but I feel like I shouldn’t have to compartmentalize different aspects of myself in order to be respected and treated fairly, even if those aspects are sexual and explicit.
