I'm always misplacing my favorite leather thimble, so I finally took the time to connect it to a chain and attach it to an old mood ring I had lying around. Bonus: it looks kinda neat!

Fixing a thrifted Anna Sui bag.

The toggle kept sliding down so I added a second row of stitches by hand which solved the problem.

While I was at it, I also restitched the ties where the stitches were broken.

Never mind the thrift flop bollocks, here's a FAST FASHION FLIP! ๐Ÿงต

This is a completely restored sequined bag I got from a fleamarket for a couple of euros.

The bag, originally from Zara, was poorly stitched together and none of the inside seams were finished.

The flimsy frayed satin lining had so much static cling, it was icky to touch. So were the ugly plastic handles. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

The bag also couldn't be washed because of the cardboard uh... "interfacing".

The nasty foam plastic material inside reminded me of meat trays. Ew!

The whole interior needs to go in the trash!

Let's sew! ๐Ÿง™โ€โ™€๏ธ

First I completely restitched the bag's sequined exterior, cut off the fraying excess material and finished all seams with a short zigzag stitch.

Then I carefully washed it by hand. Sequins get surprisingly dirty over time and after the wash, they sparkled like brand new!

Meanwhile I made a new lining and straps from thick and sturdy bridal satin leftovers.

I stitched the new straps onto the seam allowance by going back and forth several times to secure them firmly in place before folding it over.

Because satin is so slippery, I had to stitch the seam allowance down before pinning it to the outer bag.

Then I attached the lining by hand with tiny stitches.

The handles stitched to the sturdy lining won't put strain on the sequined material, which makes this bag last a long time.

So happy with the neat finish! ๐ŸŽ‰

For sewing on the buttons, I went to my favorite reference "The Complete Book of Sewing Shortcuts" (which has very few actual shortcuts. It's a reference on how to do various elements of tailoring). Of course it has a good approach: go in through the right side about 1.5 cm from the site, going between the layers, and come up at the button site. Tack a few stitches before sewing on the button. After you knot the thread, pull on the tail, which will bunch the fabric a bit, trim close and smooth the bunching and the tail disappears. #sewing #SewingTips #HowTo #tailoring

My inner miserly sewist is chuffed at fitting the SBCC Shirley shirt, (classic button down) pattern on 2/3 yard of 105โ€wide flannel. The fabric sports an all over floral and bees. Iโ€™m only 5โ€™1-1/2โ€ tall so your mileage may vary. #sewing, #sewingtips, #sew

I don't remember where I've found this, but to thread an elastic or ribbon through a long casing (1 โ€“ 2 m), a (clean) electrician fish tape is much easier and quick than the old method with a bodkin or safety pin.

There are pictures at the link (no alt text, sorry, but the text around them describe what is happening in them)

Here's something we don't always talk about, this is the inside of my garment. Due to the nature of the fabric I decided to use French seams. I also hand sewed the waistband and yoke linings closed, and all of my hems are finished in a bias binding. There are no raw edges, everything is encased, so hopefully no fraying ๐Ÿคž

@sewing Ok, first things first: hereโ€™s the pocket bunny. It slept there for an hour or so while I finished the leggings, then I deposited it in some blackberries when I went out for groceries.
Now, first set of tips!
You canโ€™t iron, for better or worse! Use clips, not pins. I make tiny snips for notches, and I use a Frixion pen for markings.
All knitwear patterns tell you to use a stretch stitch. But which one? And all the blog posts I could scrounge up when I started sewing said to use the setting that looks like a lightning bolt - but I donโ€™t think any of my stitch pictures look like lightning bolts? So hereโ€™s the stretch stitch setting I use the most. It looks kinda like a row of VVV, so in my head I call it the Roman stitch. Zero width for seams.
My next tip is to ignore the pattern length of the pocket bindings. Cut them at least an inch longer on each side - thatโ€™ll give you a little starting point and a handle. Once you get the corner sewn down, you can ever so gently stretch the binding, so it ends up pulling the pocket opening closed. When itโ€™s topstitched, just trim the binding to the width of the pocket! #sewing #SewingKnits #SewingTips

A white person is holding a softball-sized bunny in one hand. Itโ€™s clutched to their chest, eyes closed, having a little nap.The knobs side of a modern Singer sewing machine. There are stickers decorating the machine, and two small bits of gaffer tape marking two favorite stitch patterns. Itโ€™s set to width 0, length s1, and the pattern looks kind of like a row of Vโ€™s with a border above and below them.Stitching the pocket binding to the outer pocket. The binding strip is twice as long as necessary, and the machine is clamped down on the binding only. After an inch of binding, itโ€™ll pick up the pocket too.Finished pocket top. The pocket fabric curves inward because I put just a little tension on the binding as I sewed it.

I bought some PVC fabric. Basically that stuff used for tablecloths. I thought I'd try to make a wipeable washbag to get used to #sewing different fabrics. Do I need a special needle for my machine?

Trouble threading a needle? Try wetting the eye of the needle rather than the thread. I sew when I have to (crudely) and my eyes aren't what they used to be. This tip came at the right time for me. #sewing or #SewingTips

Does anyone have any tips for #sewing this type of fabric? It's very shiny and synthetic, scratchy type of material. It's also quite thin. @sewing

If you ever wind up sewing a belt for some reason- TOPSTITCH THE EDGES. I cannot stress enough how important this is. Not only does it keep the belt flat without ironing, it magically makes all your mistakes look cool and intentional!

Okay so you *can* sew lace on a normal sewing machine but you *cannot* expose it to the hole or depend on the feed dogs to feed it through easily
So 100% put paper or something underneath that you can tear off after (unless you're sewing it to an easier to deal with fabric, in which case just make sure the lace is on the top)
