Happy #ShamelessPlug Day!

Finding myself in need of #PiDay apparel ("ap-π-rel"?) for an event or two, I've added a couple of pi-related t-shirt designs to my Etsy shop: inspiredbymath.etsy.com

• "Approximately Pi" demonstrates the near-equality of π and √2+√3 (that is, 3.1415… vs 1.4142…+1.7320…=3.1462…). Note that √2 and √3 appear courtesy of our old friends the 45°-45°-90° and 30°-60°-90° triangles.

• "Powers-of-Pi Pinwheel" features a sequence of iterated involutes of a unit semicircle, each with length π^n/n! . It's the special case (t=π) of Y. S. Chaikovsky's delightful visualization of the power series for sin(t) and cos(t). (Fun Fact: Long ago, I adapted Chaikovsky's construction to tan(t) and sec(t), but cot(t) and csc(t) still remain elusive. trigonography.com/?p=881 )

These join two pi-and-tau designs.

"Approximately Pi" t-shirt design, illustrating the near-equality of pi and the sum of the square root of two and the square root of three"Powers-of-Pi Pinwheel" t-shirt design, showing iterated involutes of the unit semi-circle, each having length of pi-to-the-nth power, divided by n-factorial"Pi & Tau COEXIST" t-shirt design, with pi and tau representing the unit circle's area and circumference, respectively"Tau & Pi Mnemonic" shows how to associate tau (with its SINGLE stem) with the ONE-dimensional circumference of the unit circle, and pi (with its DOUBLE stem) with the TWO-dimensional area

#WritersCoffeeClub Jan. 14: What’s a service or skill you’d like to offer your fellow writers?

Like, personally? Right now? You're expecting something completely out of the blue?

Well, lucky you, my skill is programming and I make apps! Take your pick! I have MediaAlarm and EggTimer for all your alarm needs, and an assortment of useful tools for everything from time tracking with RainbowTimers to running your tabletop game with Dice and Random NEXT to posting your fanfic more easily with RTF2BBCode!

All of this is currently going for the fabulously low price of "FREE," which I think is everyone's favorite four-letter word you can still shout in a daycare!

Happy #ShamelessPlug Day!

I've added "Mathy 2026" t-shirts to my Etsy shop, just in time for holiday shopping ... and shipping!

inspiredbymath.etsy.com

The front features the digits of 2026 incorporated into an equation (oh-so-cleverly using an upside-down exclamation point to indicate the inverse-factorial function). The back lists over forty mathy dates (in MDY format ... sorry DMY-ers!).

Buy one of these, and you can ignore my #MathyDay posts for a full year.

Thanks for your support! :)

#ShamelessPlug Over the last few weeks, a few folks have asked me via DM what I do for a living, apart from my daily photo blog posts over here, so I thought, for my 300th post, I'd try to describe briefly what I have been working on… Coincidentally, we just celebrated our 2nd year anniversary on November 15th 🎉🥳🍾

Here it goes:

At http://asynco.org, we’re a community of people, i.e. a collective, who care about how we work and connect, especially, in asynchronous and distributed environments. If you’re looking for genuine exchange and thoughtful company in a safe and trustworthy environment, there’s a place for you with us, whenever you’re ready to join the conversation. Just get in touch and we’ll talk more 😎👍🏻

I’m Not on Bluesky, but the Blog Is

I’m told that Ancient World Twitter was a thing and many of the same people have moved to Bluesky. I am an open web person not a corporate social media person, but if you prefer following this site on Bluesky to following it on RSS or by email or on Mastodon or by checking the URL every few days, there is a way. For a few months, it has been possible to follow bookandswordblog at https://bsky.app/profile/bookandswordblog.scholar.social.ap.brid.gy

I am not there! I am unlikely to see any likes or replies. I think all corporate social media funded by other people’s money will follow the same path as Facebook and Reddit and birdsite. I wonder if in a thousand years people will talk about microblogging like the Romans talked about the time they invited the Goths across the Danube then started to shake them down and enslave them without calling in the army first (or maybe like the Athenians talked about how they realized that speaking persuasively was a skill that could be taught for money). But if you want to follow this site on Bluesky, that is possible.

Happy #ShamelessPlug Day!

Just a note that, if you like my triggy math-o-lantern t-shirt, then you might want to order one in the next day or two for delivery by Halloween. (In my experience, delivery takes about a week, but holiday shipping could cause delays.)

Happy #ShamelessPlug Day!

I've added a triggy Halloween t-shirt to my Etsy shop. The design features a jack-o-lantern (math-o-lantern?) with iconic 30°-60°-90° and 45°-45°-90° right triangle eyes (with sides in proportion 1:√3:2 and 1:1:√2, of course), an equilateral triangle nose (1:1:1), and a sinusoidal grin (or grimace).

While I'm at it, I'll mention my design for fans of the Oxford/Harvard/serial comma. Pi-Tau COEXIST, Kangleroo, and other options also available.

In other news, there's no tool quite like #Emacs #orgmode for gathering data from multiple sources in multiple formats and massaging it into an #estimate of effort for migrating a capability from one #vendor to another. #shamelessplug

Stitch Witches!

Halloween is coming and I thought I'd share these patterns which I think are pretty neat. Using glow in the dark threads they reveal themselves after lights out.
