On technology shiny objects and Truth Social.

I've written about technology and shiny objects from time to time. It's usually an interesting topic full of hubris, hype, wishful thinking, people investing other people's money in a questionable venture, and largely a Cheshire Cat that will ultimately fade, if not disappear. However, the shiny object usually has some technology aspect that has some merit that often survives in some fashion.

Truth Social is a waste of time that I've ignored. But now it's inexplicably a publicly traded company. But is it a shiny object?

In short, no. It has no technology or user value that it brings to the market. It contains nothing new or distinct. It raises no competitive concerns to other social media companies.

It has two things, Trump and his cult.

Statistically and medically, Trump won't be around much longer. Once Trump is gone the cult will fade out. Truth Social will be gone too.

For #CyberSecurityAwarenessMonth, I'd like to bring up a trend that concerns me. I'll call it the #ShinyObject trend. Security programs need to be built on fundamentals, built on a solid base that is flexible and thoroughly prepared to address threats. A #CyberResilient security program is focused on reducing risk. But the Shiny Object based program is focused on "the threat of the day" (not even the threat of the week or month anymore, they come too fast).

Even worse, when we see organizational leaders expect a new answer from their security team every time a new headline on "CEO Doomsday Weekly" website and then asks "are we protected from <insert shiny object>?" we show that:

1. Leadership doesn't have faith that our program is resilient
2. We haven't helped them understand our program's resilience

I think this problem exists for us in our personal lives as well: we focus on "oh no, I better patch today because of <insert shiny object>" vs. "I'm doing my routine patching that is part of how I keep my systems safe." (assuming we patch at all)

Don't fall into this trap.

#Hashtag #FoodPorn may seem harmless; but, among the millions of posts over decades, it's become a tiresome, meaningless #cliché. It says nothing, & does nothing. Contrary to assumptions, tagging it as "porn" does not give it a #GoldStandard, make it the #ShinyObject, or even #sexy.

Next time — when posting #food — instead of using this cheap tag, describe the recipe, food, & technique in a sincere manner. Because, what's truly sexy is thoughtfully expression of desires, and what's on menu.

I went to bed last night planning to go fix the boat, but couldn't sleep because of a coding issue stuck in my head, woke up to fix it, decided to fix the boat tomorrow so was gonna run errands, which is how I ended up cleaning the pool and weeding the garden before picking up the boys...still haven't run errands.
