Was about to reply in a thread but felt it might be hijacking, so here are some thoughts about how to learn about the mostly forgotten history of violence against the Chinese in the US.
"The Chinese must go" by Beth Lew-Williams goes into detail about the Chinese exclusion act and all the sinophobic violence that preceded and succeeded it. And how awful it was to be Chinese and living in California as it was one of the last states to remove anti-chinese laws.

I have the impression that Trump doesn't understand that tariffs are taxes on imports.
I think he believes that tariffs are some sort of import license payment that foreign governments have to pay.
In addition to his poor understanding of international trade and economics, Trump's insistence that imports from "JAIAIAIAINA" be subject to a wopping 60% tariff suggest that this central policy plank of his is rooted in racism.

REALITY: Interesting mix of pandering to #Sinophobia and failure to disaggregate. There are a lot of Chinese-owned manufacturers in these nations, but there are also a lot of non-Chinese owned. Like Boviet (Vietnamese-owned) VSUN (Japanese-owned), Imperial Star, and even QCells and First solar, which *manufacture in the countries they accuse of dumping and illegal subsidies*.
