@melindrea @catswhocode @actuallyautistic This resonates so strongly with me... I love mushrooms (like, #SpecialInterest love) but until I was about 20 I *hated* them. I had an embarrassing incident - dinner with friends - where there were mushrooms in the food. I told them I didn't like mushrooms, but would try to eat it (fighting inner disgust) and managed to do so by leaving the mushrooms on the side of my plate. After that, I made a conscious effort to try them properly - I have a clear memory of going to our local co-op and buying some loose button shrooms, and slicing them thinly, and frying them until they were crispy, and found they were actually really nice. I slowly branched out and tried cooking them in different ways, and eventually found that it's actually *squishy* mushrooms that I don't like. It registers as the flavour that I don't like, but it's certainly the squishiness that's the main feature. When I buy mushrooms, I always check to see how soft they are, and if they're like marshmallows, I reject them!
