The Cockrel And The Mill – A Russian Folk Tale

The Cockerel and the Mill is a Russian folk tale that tells the story of a kind-hearted cockerel who owns a small mill and works hard to grind grain. However, trouble arises when a greedy goat, fox, and bear steal the mill from him. Despite their strength and trickery, the cockerel cleverly outwits them with courage and persistence, eventually reclaiming what is rightfully his. The tale highlights the triumph of wit and justice over greed and brute force, reflecting the traditional values found in many Russian folk stories.

The Telephone by Kornei Chukovsky

The Telephone by Kornei Chukovsky is a whimsical Russian children’s poem that captures the lively chaos of a day in the life of a person constantly interrupted by telephone calls from talking animals. One by one, a crocodile, a bear, a heron, and other creatures call with absurd requests and comical complaints, turning an ordinary day into a fantastical adventure. Written in rhymed verse with playful rhythm and imagination, the poem delights children with its surreal humour and vivid characters, while also subtly commenting on the overwhelming pace of modern communication.

Translated from the Russian by D. Rottenberg
Drawings by V. Konashevich

Alyonushka And Her Little Brother Ivanushka – A Russian Folk Tale

A Russian Folk Tale

Alyonushka and Her Little Brother Ivanushka is a traditional Russian folk tale about a devoted sister and her mischievous younger brother. After being orphaned, the two children wander in search of shelter. Despite Alyonushka’s warnings, Ivanushka drinks from a hoofprint left by a goat and is transformed into a little goat himself. The tale follows Alyonushka’s struggles to protect her brother and herself from further misfortune, especially after she is kidnapped by a cruel sorcerer. In the end, with the help of kind-hearted people and divine justice, Alyonushka is rescued and Ivanushka is returned to his human form, reaffirming the values of familial love, patience, and goodness prevailing over evil.
