Working with Khipu & Andean Culture - new blog: thentrythis.org/notes/2023/06/

We are working with Paola Torres Núñez del Prado and building experimental Khipu technology, extending our exploration of tangible interfaces into manipulation of hierarchical structures (such as those used to describe software). The underlying concept is that a focus on accessibility through tangibility makes things that are better for everyone.

A network of small circuits inside wooden housings, some with coloured rope tied to them with patterns of knots indicating their ID. The tree structure is connected to a Raspberry Pi pico microcontroller with a small 8x8 LED screen that is showing a diagram representing the same hierarchical structure - which is able to be automatically read.
