#tinySA

Today, I chose to put my new Radtel RT-880G on my #TinySA.

Unfortunately, my RT-880G chose violence.

I am not an engineer, more of an guy, so I don't care to spend crazy money on this. I want something that won't disappoint me long term, and provides good bang for the buck for basic use. I'm also a bit of a . The very cheap ultra is what got me thinking about buying something really cheap.

I’ve been meaning to get a tinySA Ultra for a while to go with my nanoVNA, it finally turned up yesterday! Means I can now properly track down some issues I’ve been seeing which having a spectrum analyser will massively help!

I have failed to set my TinySA Ultra to show a waterfall and listen to a CW beacon in the 10m band. #HamRadio #TinySA

📢 The latest EEZ Studio release is now available (v0.13.0). Communication with non-SCPI devices is now enabled and as an example we have added IEXT for the popular spectrum analyser.

Preparing a small setup for a short, but potentially fun, field trip tonight 🙂

I would never transmit into my expensive analyzer at the bench, for that I would use a coupler, but that’s one of many reasons I bought the TinySA: it’s easy to quickly do a portable test and I won’t go bankrupt if I fry it 😂

The attenuators used here are ok for the purpose and power level, and although any spectrum analyzer is far from ideal for precise peak power measurements, for the purpose of verifying that a transmitter is ok, this is just fine 🙂

So, this is fun.

#AnyTone D578 - the vehicle mobile version of the 878. Seems pretty nice, I think mine is just broken...

  1. Doing a test on FM simplex with a nearby 878, the 578 produced a signal that was barely audible... and the 878s don't have that quiet of a speaker at full volume.
  2. Doing that same test, the 578 was completely deaf to the 878's signal.
  3. A test with the #TinySA showed that the 578 on turbo power was marginally weaker than an 878 on turbo power
  4. Trying to test with a local repeater had no luck. Putting my 878 on reverse, showed a strong signal, but no audio - likely because it wasn't picking up the PL tone that I know was set correctly.
  5. Testing against my DMR hotspot worked flawlessly. So this all seems to be on the analog FM side not the DMR side.

This is the exact same antenna and antenna position that has been used on that very 878 with very good results... so I don't think it's the problem.

The magic moment, and sound, removing the protective film from a TinySA Ultra, followed by ‘first light’ (in this case, a 400MHz carrier) ☺️

I guess it’s about time I got one of those 🤷🏼‍♂️ 🙂

Handy little device - with its limitations in Ultra Mode, above 800MHz, but definitely usable as a quick little portable test device 👍🏼

A python utility for screen capture from certain tiny devices.

The default device type is extracted from the executed script name. For example if you make a copy of the script and call it capture_tinysaultra.py, it will run with a default device type of tinysaultra.

Last week I got myself a #TinySA Ultra. It has a signal generator mode, so here I am today comparing its oscillator stability against the bench signal generator using a #NanoVNA reflashed as #TinyPFA.

I was having trouble believing the output of my adev script because it showed such high values, so I loaded up the data in TimeLab which drew the same exact plot. 🤷 I also plotted the measured phase delta between samples. I do *not* think that's thermal (air conditioning) related. #timenuts

And we are having another go at overnight operations of our student built #wspr #hamradio beacon callsign DL0WH - this time with an improvised antenna tuner adjusted for maximum field strength in the near field using #tinySA. First few transmission cycles are already looking pretty good.

Inspect the RF realm with augmented reality (AR) and a tinySA pocket-sized spectrum analyser

Hand held device being held over a blanket with a computer board, showing different colours above it representing signal strengths being displayed as augmented reality Intellectually, we all know that we exist in a complex soup of RF energy. Cellular, WiFi, TV, public service radio, radar, ISM-band transmissions from everything from thermometers to garage door openers — it’s all around […]

I built a cat ultrasound hearing visualizer Inator 😃
And I did it the proper #hamradio way: upconverting the output from an ultrasound microphone to 100MHz and displaying 100-100.080MHz on a #tinySA spectrum analyzer.
This was surprisingly easy - next step is to make a but more transportable and build some active filtering to smooth out the microphones frequency response a bit 🙂

After a static discharge accident blew the PE4302 attenuator on my #TinySA spectrum analyzer, it is working once again thanks to Glenn N6GN's replacement chip and Phil KD6RM's eyesight and soldering skill. Thank you so much!

@ph2lb Thanks for the heads up. While I have a bench SA, I also use TinySA from time to time. It is nice to see a new “official” Ultra model with 4” screen. Just ordered one for the workbench.
