So I organized my Smilyan Phaseolus coccineus into 5 subtypes by appearance. There is the ones which are pink or brown with large dark area, those are the standard scarlet runner beans.
Then there are the white variety which is the white dutch variety.
Then there is the ones which are pink or brown with red or brown stripes. That is the striped runner variety.
Then there are two unique variants. Three all black beans, I'm thinking of calling obsidian variety.
And some mostly red with white stripes, I'm thinking of calling granite.
In all should be able to make 5 plots, each at least 6 meters away from the others. And plant each variety with those which are similar to it.
Then once they bear fruit, can see which are best tasting. And sell them. I know that there is relatively little selection of phaseolus coccineus on Etsy. Mostly just the run of the mill scarlet emperor and pink lady. No one i selling white dutch, or striped runner beans.
Having obsidian and granite can be interesting as well.
It may take a couple years to naturalize to the great lakes climate, but afterwards they should do quiet well.
Also can save the tubers of the best specimens and replant them in following years. Providing a mother plant, and extra good tuber producing genes.
The tuber based mother plants should have a head start over the the seedling plants, and help provide long life genes and those which are good for many different years. I think there is a certain wisdom they will gain they can pass on to their children.
