Beneath a partly cloudy sky the sun is setting behind the far shore of a large lake. The pale blue gray sky has some streaky, hazy clouds tinted orange and gold near and along the horizon. This part of the cliffs has a wild profusion of moss, grass, shrubs and the occasional small tree growing in a thin layer of soil across much of the rock. Almost all are dormant for winter. The trees and shrubs are mostly leafless, the grass is golden brown. A weather-beaten tree with a tangle of gnarled and broken limbs stands just to our left. Monochrome image. On a bleak, cloudy and cold January evening, we are standing near the shore of a lake surrounded by a forest of leafless hardwoods with some pines and hemlocks. The lake is frozen solid, but there is not a flake of snow to be seen. Much of the near shoreline is fronted by large formations of jagged and serrated formations of dark gray rock speckled with light gray lichen and exposed veins of very light gray quartz.
