I ran some benchmarks using the report generator of #XLT. This was done on an GCP C2 instance. Each test was executed three times and the fastest result taken. XLT 6.2.5 is the old version, 7.0.0 features extreme optimizations.

JDK 17 is much faster than JDK 11 (1 and 2, 5 and 6). MS 17 is a little faster for the old XLT and little slower for the new. The enhanced Escape Analysis does not show conclusive results. Once way slower, the other faster, but below Termurin.

@markus If not mistaken we had once an implementation like that which caused more memory trouble than it was worth it. Imagine people copying out a tiny string from a large one and reference the small, we waste a ton of memory. Because it is a very delicate balance at the end, the JDK keeps it simple.

P.S. For the next version of the load test tool #XLT (open source APL) I implemented my own CharBuffer to achieve that, but in that case I know what I do with my 5 million long CSV lines.

Just ran some tests using different JDKs for our load test tool #XLT and its report generator. It mostly parses CSV data from files and turns that into charts and statistics.

Interesting is the performance boost of #JDK 17 which interestingly Graal does not exhibit. It has been that fast on JDK 11 already. #java #benchmark
