Planning #tumortherapy instead of going to school:
Interested #students had the opportunity to spend a day at the GSI/FAIR campus to learn more about tumor therapy with ion beams.

The students were able to create irradiation plans for the therapy with the professional software MatRad, developed by the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg.

At the surface of a heavy nucleus such as lead or bismuth, the magnetic field is trillions of times stronger than the Earth's field. Whether we understand the behaviour of an electron in such strong fields is still an open question. A research team led by TU #Darmstadt has now taken an important step towards clarifying this question at the Experimental Storage Ring ESR of GSI/FAIR. Today, Professor Thomas Nilsson was inaugurated as the new Scientific Managing Director of FAIR and GSI. The ceremony was attended by several hundred guests from politics, universities and international scientific collaborations as well as employees. The festive event not only offered insights into the future of cutting-edge research, but also underlined the importance of FAIR/GSI in the international scientific community.

Why is February 24 a special day for GSI/FAIR?
In 1981, scientists at GSI accelerated chromium ions on bismuth - what happened next is incredible: The elements fused and created something that hadn’t existed before.
The scientists had brought a new element into the world!
At first the name „Nielsbohrium" was suggested but due to the IUPAC naming conventions it was changed to #Bohrium.
