I write the Field Guide to the Anthropocene, a weekly essay/newsletter on the transformed Earth - as it is, as it was, and as it might be - that promises thoughtful, lyrical, well-researched writing and a dose of optimistic pessimism. Sign up to read more at jasonanthony.substack.com/.

@MoiraEve@mastodon.world Glad this is being talked about. Reagan implemented about half of the policies offered to him over his eight-year term, but Trump embraced two-thirds within his first year. Partly this was a function of Trump not expecting to win and having no plan to govern. But this is certainly the blueprint for a 2nd Trump administration (or, frankly, any other R in the current party). We really need to stop clear-cutting forest or erasing other habitat for solar arrays. We cannot afford to sacrifice biodiversity at the altar of climate action. Policy at every level should be prioritizing dual-use or multi-use siting for solar in the built environment, and directing development away from intact habitat.

I’m glad my parents did not have to live through the collapse we are experiencing.

I’m sorry that my children and my grandchildren will have to try somehow to survive it.

The Olive Tree of Vouves is believed to be the oldest olive tree in the world. Its exact age is impossible to measure, but it's at least 2000 years old, and could be as much as 4000 years old. This means it was likely originally planted by the Ancient Minoan civilisation, who prospered by trading in olive oil on the ancient Mediterranean Sea 🫒

A great lie of modern technological society: endless mineral abundance.

Consumers have swallowed the idea that gadgets will let us do more with less. Instead, we've dematerialized society entirely.

🌳 Tree-planting, while well-intentioned, highlights an unfortunate reality: non-native trees are beginning to make up significant portions of forests.

What would happen if the richest 10% reduced their CO2 emissions to the EU average (which BTW is a nice standard of living).

Answer, there would be a 35% decrease in global CO2 emissions.

So, all would be fixed, if we could limit the excesses of the top 10%.

This shows a graph that shows exactly what was said in the toot

My new piece, The Undercurrent, addresses the truly disturbing new study on the slowing of the Antarctic current that supports the entire global ocean circulation system. The piece also marks the Field Guide’s second birthday, so I provide context for this story within the mission of my writing: Recognizing the scale of our transformation of the world.

Hey, normal person in the street, the climate and environmental crisis is YOUR FAULT! Or, maybe not...

TEXT SAYS:

Our planet isn't dying because regular people won’t go vegan or only take cold showers.

It's dying because a handful of corporations and billionaires profit from pumping astronomical amounts of pollution into the air and water.

Just recently finished this: Mother of Invention by Katrine Marcal, and it’s just BRILLIANT. It could so easily be a decent book that’s mostly a list of examples of (hidden and not-so-hidden) case studies of gender bias in engineering and design, but it’s so so much more than that. And the stuff towards the end is fabulously thoughtful. This is just one example: on why we should probably stop saying “mother nature”. Highly recommended. #books #MotherOfInvention #Gender #Design

The problem with talking about climate “solutions” is that it sounds like we’re just going to repair a broken piece of furniture and return everything to normal, all tidily fixed. That’s not what we’re facing. This is about a fundamental revolution in the way our energy & transport systems work, a complete overhaul of our polluting habits & THEN living with and adapting to the consequences of having burned the equivalent of a trillion tonnes of oil. #climate #ClimateSolutions #EnergyRevolution

There are no sea shells in the deepest parts of the ocean (at least not big enough for us to see). Shells are mostly made out of calcium carbonate, and beneath 4-5 km depth in the ocean (the Challenger Deep is ~10,902m) the pressure makes the calcium carbonate dissolve. Marine snail shells falling from above will never reach the seafloor – they’ll just dissolve on the way. Anything living in the depths will never see a snail, and only silica-based shells will survive.  #ocean #snails

Seaweeds are not plants. They’re algae, without roots or leaves, although they do photosynthesize: harvesting the sun’s energy to build themselves. BUT there are a small number of real flowering plants in the sea: the seagrasses, which evolved from terrestrial plants and grow in large meadows.  Mostly water moves pollen around, but for at least one species, small crustaceans do the job of bees and carry sticky pollen from one plant to another.  Underwater gardening, anyone?  #Ocean #Seagrass

Even if you took away the waves, the ocean surface would not be flat.  That’s partly because Earth’s gravity varies across the surface, pulling water around and creating huge lumps and holes up to 100m high/deep. But then temperature, salinity, atmospheric pressure and currents add extra dynamic bumps on top of this of a few tens of cm.  Tracking these lets us measure ocean currents from satellites, which is an astonishing feat.
