This is Momma Cat. She never had much of a name, only becoming “momma” after she had her first litter pretty much as soon as she could (she broke out of my place and got knocked up during her first heat).
I rescued her in the fall of 2007. She was tiny black skeleton stalking around my cottage, days away from death (no energy to even fight me when I picked her up). I took her to a vet with no hopes of keeping her but a kind friend happened to show up and paid her bills. She cuddled with me when it was cold and she bore three kittens—one of which is a Siamese twice her size.
I wasn’t able to bring her to Hawai’i and so she wound up at my best friend’s house. He called me today to let me know she was dying. I spoke to her over the phone. She died shortly after and is now buried next to one of her kittens who died last year.
I hate that I wasn’t there. But I’m happy she went peacefully and gracefully. It was a better death than she would’ve had almost 18 years ago.
You were a wonderful cat, Momma. I’m glad we got to know each other.
