So, I'm up late jamming on my sanxian. I should be practicing a piece (or pieces) for tomorrow night's performance, but my heart's not really in it, so I'm playing what I want to play,

It's suddenly occurring to me as I'm playing that I don't have to play the part as written. I can still play what I feel, and it will still work. It's just a subtle jazz flair to the part. If I do it right, it will be interpretive and it will be me, but it will still sound good.
