Now that the Assisted Dying Bill here in the UK has passed the first hurdle in the line to becoming legal, I have to say I think it's being rushed, and there needs to be a firm legal and medical framework put in place before assisted dying becomes law. Certainly our National Health Service as of now, is not equipped for a change as big as this. There also needs to be 100% watertight legal protection for vulnerable people who could be coerced into euthanasia. It needs more thought, though I absolutely do agree with the principle.

I'd encourage everyone to assemble a spreadsheet of accounts, insurance policies, subscriptions, etc., and get wills and power of attorney sorted out (these take months). Put together an In Case of Emergency envelope with passwords and phone login, for use by a loved one in case you're out of commission. This makes picking up the pieces much easier.

Life throws curveballs at you; you never know when this will come in handy. #widowhood #terminalIllness #cancer #death

Pondering #EndOfLife matters #death #dying #cancer #TerminalIllness and how some folk are massively organised and some really never think about things until it's too late. A friend had major surgery yesterday and biopsy and other tests may or may not prove she has something especially grim. She has spent the last few weeks sorting her finances and whilst she hopes none of this is needed for a while, was relieved to get her affairs in order for partner and daughter. Another friend died last week and he went downhill very fast. He was not scared of dying, had no family, lived a very simple life and died in a nursing home. I tried to get him to think about all this sort of thing but he was too ill. So.. I spent an odd lunchtime with a woman from social services starting to go through his meagre possessions. Felt oddly intrusive but also profoundly moving to see what he valued.

An important perspective on hospices. My sister was diagnosed with stage 4 incurable cancer about 18 months ago, she was initially horrified to receive a letter about palliative care, but her local hospice offers her so much more than just end of life care. This includes therapy, massages and any number of other outpatient services for her and her family.

Facade

I am stressed.
I am close to my breaking point.
I am always the rock,
I smile and make jokes.
They all think I'm fine.
The shoulder to be cried on.

But inside I am crying.
I am wrought with fear.
I cannot speak them aloud,
As my facade would shatter.
I am not the rock I have to be.
I am simply playing a part.

When is it my turn to cry?
When can I share my fears?
Who can tell me it'll be fine,
That it will work out?
Is there no one else willing to play this role?

I was drafted, I didn't volunteer.

I've been quiet and patchy on social media for a while now - partly because of ongoing long COVID - which I've been transparent about - but also because my mother's dementia is worsening. Which I haven't chosen to talk openly about until now.

Dementia is a horrible terminal disease, and although my mother's has been kind to us as she still recognises the people closest to her and that is somewhat comforting as her world gets smaller and smaller, it is still devestating.

I am my mother's responsible person for everything - do your advance planning everyone! - and although we are well-organised this is still incredibly difficult and exhausting. For anyone who has waited for me to return emails or phone calls this is the primary reason, and again I thank you for your patience with my erratic schedule.

I will be travelling back to the mainland this weekend, returning next week, to help settle my mum into full-time care. The admin alone is astonishing, as those of you who have undertaken this process understand, but the details of moving a life from a home into a care facility is wrenching and fraught.

Have a good weekend and I'll see you soon,

Annetta

Hospice care is a crucial end of life plan
A journey to take with comfort and dignity as its span
It's available to those who need it most
From a terminal illness or simply old age coast
Understanding and navigating the process is known
To provide a comfortable passage for those about to be flown
