Alpine bee on white flower, square image on black. During a recent visit to the Trenta region of Italy, my companions and I hiked from Madonna di Campiglia up 750 meters to Rufugio Tuckett. During this hike that we came upon a large bee, quietly going about it's business on a lone Fireweed thistle. The bee was so still that at first I though it was dead. But as it turned out he was just laden down from his labors on the sturdy and spiky mountain thistle.

Carline thistle is a short-stemmed perennial herb, often called stemless carline thistle, native to the mountains of central and southern Europe. The low-growing plant has spiny, toothed leaves and attractive off-white flowers encompassed by sharp silvery bracts giving it a characteristic thistle-like appearance.

This region of Trenta is bursting with natural beauty and diversity. It comes as no surprise then, that the area has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Renowned for skiing in the winter months and mountain climbing, hiking and cycling in summer and late spring/early autumn, the area has something to offer year round.
