@nev I also like @cmtribull's verbiage about using other people's copyrighted images without their permission:

"Credit photos, art, and other intellectual property and adhere to the creator's copyright rules (don't post copyrighted material you aren't supposed to!)"

@nev In case of interest, here's an instance that allows arthropod pics without CWs or Sensitive Media toggle.

@BlueAppaloosa

I once had a meter guy from the gas company need access to our basement. He was well over 6' tall and likely weighed 250 lbs. Turned out he had a fear of cats, and we had two, and he almost crashed through a window when they appeared and wanted to greet him. I'm not sure how common that is but it's noteworthy that the Sensitive Media / CW culture of Mastodon doesn't seem to extend to all fears. Unless dogs and cats are flagged, I just can't get behind CWs for spiders and snakes.

@nev Please keep me posted on your rethinking.

@loren @nev I read a half-dozen articles on phobias this month and at least for children, exposing them to interesting stories about said organisms is the way to go. Works for some adults, too. E.g., my sister has an extremely strong reaction to spiders, courtesy our mom who thought all spiders were brown recluses out to kill the entire family, but is warming to them over the years because I send her pics of adorable jumping spiders. She now refers to salticids as "gateway spiders".

@nev I agree that marking organism pics as "sensitive media" is not worth it. Hashtag-filtering works well, plus the awkwardness of displaying hidden media and CWs is a considerable downer in terms of user experience. Also, deciding what should be sensitive or CW'd seems futile, and overuse of those tools dilutes their effectiveness when truly needed. And I don't see people flagging their flower, cat, and fish pics (#anthophobia, #ailurophobia, #ichthyophobia).

I found this strange #insect on the side of a tree this morning. I puzzled over what it was for a long time, and fortunately was rescued by the #iNaturalist algorithm to tell me that this is probably a Alsophila #moth, a genus in which females are flightless. #InvertFest #InverteFest

A brownish insect, with color made up of different scales, white to tan to brown giving it a speckled look. Brown legs secure it to the bark of a tree that matches its coloration

A cheery bow-legged #bug from summer, seen in City Park, New Orleans between downpours. The juveniles mimic ants.

An ant-like insect is a deep red, sitting on a green leaf. Only on closer inspection do you see that it isn’t an ant based on a different pattern on its back where wings will grow in the adult form.

@nev Doh! I *just* just migrated to my other account so that I could post arthropods without CW/sensitive media hassle. I didn't want to do that on flippingrocks because I thought it would cause problems. I'm of the opinion that if one uses hashtags liberally, people with spider, mite, insect, insect aversions can easily filter those posts out. The filtering ability on Mastodon seems built for that.

I am a macro wildlife photographer, jciv on Flickr & iNaturalist. Spiders are my favorite subject, but I also like flies, moths, & butterflies. I am not an expert, but I like sharing what I know.

I am a founder of #Arachtober, a celebration of spiders during October, starting in 2007 on Flickr. It spread. I really loved the interaction with entomologists and arachnologists on Twitter. Read about Arachtober at LiveScience: livescience.com/52555-arachtob

Little slime moulds (Metatrichia floriformis, I think) ready to release their spores. The 1mm black balls are fruiting bodies and split open, like flowers, releasing spores. Floriformis means 'flower-shaped'. #FungiFriday

Cynipid wasp on snow. Given the highly reduced wings I'm assuming this is a female of the agamic generation. Not sure what species (Acraspis?). #wasps #Hymenoptera #insect #entomology #snow #asexual #supranivean #GallWasps #galls

This yellow springtail is Protaphorura aurantiaca. Spotted loads of these today. #collembola

I am tired of being told to put all of my insect content behind warnings. I am an entomologist. This is my life, and I am not going to hide it.

If you make a CW suggestion, I will just do us both a favor and block you.

Christmas lichen (Cryptothecia rubrocincta) from Myakka River State Park, Florida. Apparently they don't produce apothecia (fruiting bodies with spores) like most lichens. Reproduction is instead via isidia, surface outgrowths that contain the partnering fungal hyphae and algae. #lichen #lichens #fungus #fungi #nature #biology #Christmas
