neighbor's cat plotting her next attacc #caturday

#cat #cats #CatsOfMastodon

from within a gap in a wooden board loosely hovering over an open-topped cage, a cat can be seen staring intently and intensely at some object of its focus offscreen

@m2vh bam, now I know, thanks!

and a not-sure-what-this-is in our apartment complex, to add to the pool of #Bloomscrolling for the day

#photography #flowers #macrophotography

an overhead view of a colorful flower in the beginning stages of blooming, with red, orange, and white petals still bunched up in a cluster in the center but starting to unfurl, and large green leaves out of focus beneath

achievement unlocked (spotted in local parking lot)

two bumper stickers; the right one a gorgeous painting of Glacier National Park, the left one the more interesting/amusing one, proclaiming in sequence

and a few other #ThickTrunkTuesday highlights from the same trip, including some still unexplained phenomena(?)

#photography #nature #NaturePhotography #trees #wood #woodpecker

a horizontal-but-above-ground fallen tree, dappled with sunlight and shadows cast from overhead ferns, its surface absolutely RIDDLED with sequentially drilled tiny woodpecker holesa close-up of some complex textured wood, from a tree stripped of its bark, with some squiggles as evidence of boring insects, but also many black spots, which I've still been struggling to explain, though my current operating theory is that those were the spots exposed to either bugs or "the elements" when woodpeckers originally drilled holes through the bark, and once the rest of the bark fell away, the exposed portions remained spotteda single hole drilled by a different sort of woodpecker: rather than hundreds of tiny pinpoint holes, One Single Giant Square-Shaped Hole, big & deep enough for a large bird to fit its head in (or any other small animal to make a home from), on a furry-barked redwood type treea very tall dead stump serving as a nurse log to a young tree starting to grow from its top, with one long exposed root running about six feet along the stump's exterior to reach the dirt below; a patch of sunlight illuminates the stump's GORGEOUS deep rusty red color

Warp Speed from Endor! more for #ThickTrunkTuesday , different place from the other foggy grayscale one, same view but more color :)

#photography #nature #NaturePhotography #trees

another "fish-eye" view up to the ceiling of a forest, with trees pointing inward from every direction around the frame toward a gap in the canopy in the center, this time with more spring greens and browns and lively color in general

@brittybyte "pictures of reflections flipped upside down so they look the right way up again" can be a REALLY fun genre to play with >^..^< sometimes it's obvious it's a reflection, sometimes the water is so still it takes a long time to notice

after three weeks with no chance to get out (yay rain) FINALLY the weather permitted and I made hay while the sun was shining with a much-needed marathon nature walk ^_^ I'll probably be sprinkling some highlights/favorites over the next week or so, starting with have some SHADOWS :-D for #MushroomMonday

#photography #nature #NaturePhotography #forest #mushrooms #light #shadow #leaves

an overhead view of a light dusty brown "button" type mushroom surrounded by dusty brown dead leaves & assorted forest detritus, with a double shadow cast on the mushroom head by two adjacent overhead ferns (out of view)a semi-shaded view of a black & red conk mushroom, its surface cross-thatched by shadows of ferns above it, in a pattern resembling a lawn chair or grass huta light-colored rock on forest floor, with a soft shadow cast on it by a cilantro-shaped plant (whose tip is slightly visible at the top); the lenghty stem was framed deliberately to run along the edge of the rocka very "leafy" plant leaf of some type or another, angled at JUST the right angle in the sun, that you can see three different states of light on its surface: direct sunlight from overhead, shadow on the surface cast by another part of the leaf, and "sunlight through the underside" illuminating its skeletal structure like an X-ray (sunlight through thin plant membranes is always SO beautiful)

and a small bundle of highlights from the beaver prowl with the local nature group the other day >^..^<

#photography #nature #NaturePhotography #wetlands #reflection #trees #slugs

a not-quite-sunset-yet view of a marsh , as seen through a gap in some green sedge reeds along its banka close-up of a cute little baby slug, with gold-and-brown-striped lower side of his body, slowly making his way across a grassy footpatha photo of the reflection in a puddle of our nature guide giving an enthusiastic lecture, reversed so that the reflection appears rightside upanother reflection-flipped-so-it-looks-rightside-up-again, this time a number of trees on the bank of a river at sunset, clearly a reflection based on significant ripples on the surface of the water

some subtle evidence of possible activity by local beavers

#photography #nature #NaturePhotography #trees #beaver #wildlife

a late evening view of a fallen tree on the ground, with a HUGE round chunk of it chewed out in a very organized fashion, with clear teeth marks

been a very busy few days, but a belated #ThrowbackThursday Rocky Peak / Hummingbird Loop, Simi Valley, CA, June 2021

#photography #nature #NaturePhotography #desert #FensterFreitag #rock #geology

the mouth of a cave (or old house?) built around a large leaning rock that serves as its roof, with side walls made of sloppily constructed clay or concrete; overgrown with weeds outside the entrancea panoramic view of a rock formation, with a slightly cracked but mostly smooth and wavy stratum through the middle, almost resembling petrified wooda square window view of a scrubland mountain scene from inside a large metal storm draina closeup view of some sunbleached and very dry flowers, in high contrast with a black background, a few peeking out from the shade

even on the most gray, dull day, somehow, sometimes, life finds a way

#photography #urbanphotography #abstract #metaphor #life

a view off the edge of a pier, with brown muddy water beyond (and 20 feet below), and a very lichen-covered board at the bottom; poking out of it, another board; and poking out of a crack in that board, a sprig of blackberry bush, growing without access to any dirt anywhere

a couple more of "The B-Roll", trying to get its full tail, and one of the whole body, wings included, but with less detail

#photography #nature #NaturePhotography #macrophotography #insects #dragonfly

a lengthwise photo of the same dragonfly, with more attention spent on the length of its tail and the gorgeous symmetrical pattern of splashes of blues, browns, and blacksa more zoomed-out view of the whole dragonfly, without much detail but at least seeing the full wingtips and his surroundings

gorgeous dragonfly sitting on a bush outside a neighbor's apartment yesterday 😍 unfortunately I wasn't able to get one that was both in focus AND caught his full wingspan, so this was the best I was able to do... I was impressed and appreciative of how patient he was with me getting all up in his business; I suspect it was probably just cold out and he wanted to conserve energy as much as possible.

#photography #nature #NaturePhotography #macrophotography #insects #dragonfly

a close-up of a dragonfly atop a bright green leafy bush; the glassy reflective segmented wings aren't fully in view, but its very fuzzy thorax is, as well as a portion of its speckled turquoise brown & black tail
