The National Academies just published the final version of Understanding and Addressing Misinformation about Science, an outstanding summary of an enormously dangerous threat.

The report is available free online or as PDF, nap.nationalacademies.org/cata.

Originally published in December 2024, it's also a time capsule from the era when the federal government was part of the solution. 1/3

Understanding and Addressing Misinformation about Science is a comprehensive and lengthy report. You can find a few quick recommendations for dealing with misinformation on science on pages 219-223. 2/3

A recommendation from the Understanding and Addressing Misinformation about Science report suggests that universities, researchers and civil society organizations work together to proactively counter systematic campaigns to mislead the public.

The Understanding and Addressing Misinformation about Science report recommends that funders of scientific research & professional science organizations establish an independent consortium to curate sources of high-quality science information on topics of public interest.

Dunno if such a consortium is planned but I'd suggest starting with a pilot effort on vaccines with a national promotional campaign on social media and local TV. 3/3

@sigue I took this photo very close to La Jolla Cove, which gets hundreds of visitors on a weekend, and the cliff is sheer. On the other hand, I think this guy fishes along this stretch of coast daily without incident.

Chihuly Nights at the Adelaide Botanic Gardens provided an opportunity to see the glass artworks in a different light. This is Fiori Boat (2018) floating in the First Creek wetland. The night time setting focuses attention on the boat filled with multi-coloured glassworks, largely red reed like pieces but also other shapes and other colours.

True story: After a wedding this weekend in San Diego, our family enjoyed an excellent takeout supper from a nearby Vietnamese restaurant. Wondering why the restaurant didn't have better online ratings, my son found this.

Yes, Your Friends and Neighbors Want to Talk to You About Climate Change

Really, they do — they just don’t think you want to talk about it. So stop being afraid of pushback, break the “climate silence,” and start a conversation.

Nature analysis signals the beginnings of a US science brain drain

A trawl of job views and application data suggests jobseekers are looking abroad as the Trump administration’s cuts to science take hold.

(There's also plenty of anecdotal evidence for this heartbreaking generational shift. We know one world-famous biologist who is seriously considering an offer to move his lab to Australia.)

A seaside scene. The view from a terrace with white stucco walls and terracotta-red tiles in the foreground. The sun casts sharp, dark shadows across the floor, creating almost geometric surfaces of red, white, and blue. In the middle of the wall, there is an opening with a staircase leading down toward the sea. On the blue horizon, a small dark sailboat is visible. The line of the sea horizon aligns perfectly with the top of the wall. The sky is mostly clear, with scattered clouds.

Pogled s terase z belim zidom in terakoto po tleh v ospredju na morsko gladino in nebo zadaj. Sonce meče ostre in temne sence čez tla. Skoraj geometrične ploskve rdeče, bele in modre.
