@nathanofsax judging from the video the SM7 sounds wat thinner than the N8!
Whenever I listen to Melissa Aldana she sounds at the top of her game. Amazing performance here - and also that of über Mike Moreno on guitar (albeit he looks a bit impatient to start playing :)

@ratatosk absolutely! Although I must say I now find the old thrill more on modern jazz and some rock acts (like Fontaines DC I just discovered last year). It's harder today given the sheer amount of releases and the decline (IMHO) of the modern pop. Back to your post, it was around 1982: I joined a band playing guitar: singer handled me a few LPs "this is what we'll be doing" - and those were the very first couple of LPs by Echo, U2, Joy Division and the Cure (amazing first 2 albums!) Cheers!
From the Lions Mouth is the second studio album by the English post-punk band the Sound, released in November 1981 on record label Korova...
The album cover artwork was taken from the 1872 painting Daniel in the Lion's Den by Briton Rivière.
NME compared the album's bleak nature to Joy Division's Closer. Despite The Sound being posited as a gloomy band, AllMusic wrote, "snake-charming opener 'Winning' is like a dash of cold water in the faces of all the bands that were wallowing and withering away at the weeping well [...] The Sound were not mopes. They had their problems with life, but rather than just vent or escape from them, they confront them and ask questions and attempt to sort it all out.".. - Wikipedia

@ratatosk quite a thrill to know I lived those days at those ages, making music and being inspired by brands like The Sound, or The Chameleons. <3 bought this album the day it came out and it spent weeks, in not months, in a row on my turntable!
@BEK97 checking it right now. Great concept and better contents :)
Really personal playlists are fun - like a statement or form of expression. Here's my "small" treasure (in case you'd care to check it!)

I created a "Kind of Silent" playlist to feed my obsession w/ #MilesDavis In A Silent Way. Selections echo the vibe of the OG (nothing matches exactly): ethereal, proto-ambient, hypnotic, unhurried, spacious, serene, blissful, genre fluid. For patient listening, focused work, or insomnia. "Funeral Dirge" Terence Blanchard (A Tale Of God's Will - A Requiem For Katrina, 2007
The song and album name say a lot already; but beyond mourning, grief and pain, there is hope. It's about starting over, beginnings, heroism. Yes it's a march, but looking ahead, chin up, into the horizon. It is clear on the cover as well. Listen and feel it in your bones, in your heart. The album won a 2008 Grammy for Terence Blanchard.

@ratatosk hi! I played several of Barry's arrangements but somehow I missed this... thank you! wonderful late 50s vibe reminiscent of The Poll Winners sound <3
Guitar And The Wind by Barry Galbraith released on Decca in 1958
Marc Myers wrote for JazzWax:
"Barry Galbraith was one of New York's busiest session jazz guitarists in the 1950s and '60s. Between 1941 and the late 1970s, he was on 620 recording dates, a staggering total. How many albums did he record as a leader under his name? Just one—Guitar and the Wind, for Decca..
The album is beautifully arranged, swings tastefully and is a gorgeous example of what made Galbraith special. His chord voicings were seductive and his improvised runs were tasty and unbeatable.
Recorded in January 1958 over three days, the album featured the following personnel and tracks:
Urbie Green, Chauncey Welsch and Frank Rehak (tb); Dick Hixson (b-tb); Bobby Jaspar (fl,ts); Eddie Costa (p,vib); Barry Galbraith (g); Milt Hinton (b); Osie Johnson (d) and Billy Byers (arr)"

Now playing (vinyl collection nr 5): Art Pepper "Roadgame".
"Recorded in performance at Maiden Voyage, Los Angeles, August 15, 1981, a full moon night."
Art Pepper - alto sax and clarinet
George Cables - piano
David Williams - bass
Carl Burnett - drums
"One for Phil" Oliver Nelson (More Blues and the Abstract Truth, 1965)
One of my early Jazz passions. I remember exactly when I first heard it: having dinner alone my glass of wine in hand and the world stopped at 35 seconds into the music. This is a wonderfull ballad with Phil (Woods) himself playing the alto saxophone; Oliver Nelson's arrangement, I believe, was penned during the recording session!
Gorgeous!
This is my latest album. Boosts appreciated. All proceeds for this release go to charity. Currently supporting refugees and reproductive rights.

@joaopaz @vinylrecords thanks for the encouragement! I've been slowly spinning & cataloging away, about halfway through my records now, though my masto posts have fallen off a bit. Might have to fix that..
@BEK97 @vinylrecords I'm on the exact same mission - go for it! :)
I admit my wife's not wrong when she claims I don't listen to all the records I *have*. Plus I'm behind on cataloging and other maintenance. So I'm embarking on a mission to simultaneously play and catalog every record in my collection. I'll try to keep up here, tagging #BEKrecords in case anyone wants to follow or mute. This might take a while but it will be a labor of love. #music #vinyl @vinylrecords
"When It Rains" Brad Mehldau (Largo, 2002)
The track that woke me up to modern jazz. I heard it in the 2006 "The Lake House" movie - an instant "stop-the-press" moment!
The thrill came much later - no Shazam in those days!
"When It Rains" starts with an easy, gentle melody and slowly evolves into an angular solo over woodwinds-rhytmic-morse-code motifs.
Music is supposed to make you *feel* this tune sure does it to me.
@ratatosk didn't know this album. I'm listening to it right now, awsome as ever B-)
