This was a fascinating deep-dive on the origins of the circle-slash sign, I hope you enjoy it:

https://tedium.co/2024/03/09/red-circle-slash-no-symbol-history/

"This circle-meets-slash combo raises a question: At what point do things become impossible to find online—not because they’re too rare or uncommon, but because they’re too ubiquitous? Where their present-day use cases drown out all examples of the past hiding around somewhere?"

This photo is from a few days ago, when we had a lovely morning walk in the forest. It was quite cold though, as you can hopefully tell from the image.

I'm surprised how often in the #notebook or #hobonichi subreddits, people are grappling with perfectionism to such a degree that they are afraid to start writing in an empty notebook.

It's handwriting, you WILL fuck it up. Embrace the mistakes and start writing. Lower your standards and embrace how amazing handwriting can be for structuring your thoughts and expressing your creativity.

Making mistakes is how you deal with perfectionism. The world will keep turning.

- I've had a great time with my mother, who stayed over for the week.
- The house smells nice and clean (thanks mom!).

Ik ben op zoek naar dit #boek van #FloraWaycott. Overal uitverkocht. Iemand die het in zijn boekenkast heeft staan en er niets mee doet en er van af wil?
Of iemand die het toch ergens te koop weet (in Europa)? #dtv

Edit: Ik zoek de Nederlandse versie.

Hi all, I've just setup my own #Akkoma instance, so it's time for an updated #introduction
I promise I won't move accounts again and I'll keep @kedara as a backup.

I'm very much into #yoga and #meditation and everything related to that. I'm trying to learn #Sanskrit because its a beautiful language and also in order to be able to read text like the #BhagavadGita #Upanishads #YogaSutras which greatly inspire me.

I'm from the #Netherlands and work in #science in the field of #AirQuality I may occasionally share something about that, but this is not a work account (and any opinions are my own).

I love #photography , mostly related to #nature #weather #clouds #trees
I try to make a trip to the #forest at least every weekend, I'm lucky to live at the edge of the #Veluwe nature area.

I love growing food in my #garden using #organic #permaculture and #RegenerativeAgriculture inspired methods, I'm dreaming of tending my own #FoodForest some day.

Unfortunately I'm operating at half power thanks to #LongCovid since Feb. '22.

I'll mainly post in English with some posts in Dutch as well. Unpinned toots will be deleted after 3 months, I only boost photos with alt text (feel free to let me know if I've forgotten to add it!).

Let me know if you have similar interests and I'll be happy to chat!

Hello Fediverse! I've just finished setting up my own private #Akkoma instance, let's see how this goes.

I chose Akkoma because of its features and because it requires a lot less resources than e.g. Mastodon and is therefore a bit more sustainable.

It was pretty easy to setup via Docker.

Let me know if you have any tips for setting up the server. Specifically, are there any blocklists I should be aware of or other important settings?

Morning glow over a countryside stream of water with a bank on both sides. The water is reflecting the clouds. The sunrise is colouring the clouds yellow, and it's a little foggy. It's a beautiful crispy morning.

Interesse? r.pijpers@kennisnet.nl.

Title: The Remains of the Checkpoint at Shitomae (1956)

Artist: Kasamatsu Shiro

A full moon shines down out of a starless night sky, illuminating a pair of rustic wooden buildings standing near a tall wiry pine tree. In the foreground, the stumps of a few dozen wooden posts poke up through the snow, all that remains of some lost structure. Beyond, the pine tree dominates the center of the image, its branches heavy with snow. A figure carrying a bucket is approaching the nearest building; warm lights shine in the windows of the second building further on. A layer of crisp fresh snow covers everything.

Today at the Lair we met a woman who was trained in traditional kilt making in Scotland. She was stunned that we were interested because no one apparently wants to learn the precise mathematics and hand sewing, or do a craft that doesn't earn much money. People would rather buy wool/ poly blend pleated skirts as more of a novelty costume instead of regarding and wearing the kilt as part of more dressy or formal wear.

The kilt maker returned with one of the kilts she is working on. She does 10 hand stitches to an inch with a tiny needle to precisely line up the checks. The piece of paper with all the measurements was incredible, right down to fractions of a millimeter because it all adds up when you have 30 pleats that must taper from waist to hip and still maintain the pattern.

Each kilt this maker crafts has 8m of hand woven tartan from Scotland in it, and the fabric alone can cost AUD$400+ depending on the rarity of the tartan. Her labour is additional and she is very picky about who she will make kilts for. They must not be stored in mothballs, they must be worn regularly.

My ancestry is Scottish on dad's side, we have a tartan, crest and motto, and the kilt maker said that our name isn't on the rare list so it'd be readily available. I hate our tartan because it's ugly as hell but I'm going to tell dad we should buy a few metres of proper Scottish woven cloth.

We have lost our regard for cloth and the craft of garment making because it happens out of sight, made by brown hands, and as disposable as toilet paper. A kilt was a lifelong garment, by day it was dress and by night it was warmth. Nothing is cut from the length of cloth in a kilt, it is truly zero waste.

Anyway. I just love textiles and sewing and fashion and I want to share that with other people.

Australia is now the world’s biggest consumer of textiles per capita. We send more than 200,000 tonnes of clothing to landfill every year.

You don't need as many clothes as you think you do.

The Baird tartan: shades of teal, green and turquoise with wide single and thin double black lines, and an alternating purple thin/thick/thin line.

A certain well-known person (who I shall not name) recently implied that only “techbros” code for the #Fediverse.

That person is sadly mistaken.

#Sharkey is coded by a woman. #Frequency is coded by a woman. Most of the co-authors of #ActivityPub are women.

Stop spreading the myth that only men build the Fediverse.
