Interesting moment tonight when the spacecraft returned from the international space station. Soon after splash down several dolphins showed up to check out the strange things happening.

Spacecraft meets intelligent life.

A view of the cone-like spacecraft, scorched from the re-entry, from above, floating in a calm, clear, bright blue ocean. Two dolphins are seen swimming on the left of the capsule. The bobbing capsule, a recovery boat on the right, with the back of a dolphin on the water to the right.

Chinese #electricvehicles auto maker and battery manufacturer #BYD reveals 1 MW charger!
“In order to completely solve our users’ charging anxiety, we have been pursuing a goal to make the charging time of electric vehicles as short as the refuelling time of petrol vehicles”
An impressive technical feat for electro-chemistry, another step towards full road transport #decarbonization .

“New Year always comes so suddenly…”
Not many countries met today’s deadline for new climate targets to Paris Agreement set 10 years ago when adopting the Agreement itself

All eyes on the EU, China, India and others to submit before the end of the year.

"Drill, baby, drill"? What for? Looks like the #oilmarket is saturated and demand will be decreasing. Yes, it's #PeakOil demand, thanks to #electrification and #ClimateChange policies. According to @Grist: "The Gulf [of Mexico] accounts for 97 percent of all offshore oil and gas production in the U.S. Nearly 12 million acres are under active leases in the Gulf, but only about 2.4 million acres are being used to produce oil and gas"

@respectmyplanet CCS might be more economical than hydrogen right now, but there are certainly many other options out there that yield faster and cheap mitigation before you need to consider CCS, like renewables. CCS will be needed to compensate for things that are impossible to avoid (like non-CO2 emissions from agriculture) or to limit temperature overshoot above 1.5C - but CCS should not be the default go-to solution, at the risk of carbon infrastructure lock-in.

"Hydrogen production investment costs are currently 3-4 times higher than what some established studies estimated in the early 2020s. The cost differential is slowing down the clean hydrogen industry progress."
Study by University of #Vaasa : reality check for #hydrogen and its role for low-carbon #Energy provision for #ClimateChange mitigation. OK, but what happens with hard-to-abate sectors after we adjust to this bubble? Even *more* #CCS ?

IRENA (2020) estimate for the current electrolyser system cost is almost 2-times lower than BNEF (2040) estimate for 2050.

@Infoseepage Yes indeed. But this is 8 MW, this is not small! I remember a time not too long ago when a 1 MW PV installation was considered record breaking.

A beautiful photo in my view: #photovoltaics #pv panels integrated in the landscape that also allow agriculture beneath them, #agrovoltaics. New 8 MW power plant in China, using #perovskite panels, several percentage points more efficient than usual silicon ones.

@janrosenow and if you go economy-wide you get such Sankey diagrams that show that you can transform your energy system, massively shift towards #electrification, reduce emissions, reduce wasted heat, all the while increasing energy services across the board to raise standards of living worldwide.

@hausfath and this incentive for deforestation is already happening before the future carbon reward that would be given to biomass power producers for doing BECCS. Can't imagine anything going wrong.

Just presented at this year's meeting of the #IntegratedAssessment Modelling Consortium #IAMC, on possible production pathways for #hydrogen and associated emissions: there's low-carbon and then there's *low*-carbon, and we should be mindful about carbon infrastructure lock-in and technology learning.
