FYI to Washingtonians and anyone who might shop at a UFCW 3000 union store in the area, but their union voted to strike.

Sounds like they go back to negotiate on the 12 and 13th, but if that falls flat, it seems likely that the union will need to strike. This includes Fred Meyer, QFC, Albertsons, Safeway, Haggen, and Saars.

A bunch of Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus) on an islet in north Vancouver Island. Photo taken from a boat, the sea was rough and I'm glad we safely made it back to the harbour. The only other boat out there on that day was the Coast Guards.

Time for another plant-heavy hiking thread! This time it's an ascent of Mt Dickerman, a minor but well-positioned peak in the Cascades of WA State. The peak (about 5700 ft/1730 meters elevation) is still snowed in but down at the trailhead, Spring is well underway. The trees here are pretty immense-- Douglas fir, Western hemlock and Western cedar--and since we're on the wet side of the mountains, there's lichen and moss on everything. 1/9
