Good day at the East Reading Festival. It had a lovely, low fluff community feel. We had a steady stream of folk coming for a chat or to learn more. Left feeling pretty positive🌞

Come along to find out more about or chat generally about the state of British Politics and Society. You could even play “The Chocolate Election Challenge”, although I could imagine we might swap some other delights in as we expect the sun to be shining beautifully. Hope to see you there!

President Jimmy Carter Nailed It

Bad Choices

In a moment that should've stopped time, Jimmy Carter—quiet as a monk, sharp as a scalpel—offered a truth so unassuming, most missed the incision. He was speaking to Trump, but really, he was speaking to all of us. Carter’s point was this: While China has spent decades laying tracks for the future, we've been digging graves in the past. They've built cities, schools, trains that move faster than thought. We've built military bases, debt, and an empire of rust.

It wasn't a boast. It was an autopsy.

China chose infrastructure. We chose interference. They built railways across continents. We bombed bridges across borders. They invested in Al, medicine, and education. We invested in overthrowing oil-rich governments, branding it freedom.

We spent $300 billion trying to bend the world to our will. They spent it making their own nation unshakable.

We don't have high-speed trains. We don't have roads that last. We don’t have universal healthcare, or education systems that top the charts. But we do have the most advanced weapons on Earth, pointed at every direction but inward.

If we'd used even a fraction of that money on ourselves, our cities would hum like circuits. Our schools would shine. Our hospitals would heal. Our people might feel something we haven't felt in a long time—progress. That was Carter’s quiet bombshell: the war we're losing isn’t to China. It's to our own addiction to dominance. And our refusal to invest in anything we can't control.

Liking this analysis of the versus debate electoral-reform.org.uk/whats-

This bit is so true - "Manifestos are designed with swing seats in mind – and parties spend most of their money campaigning in them.
That means that if you happen to live in a safe seat, your political views are, in essence, irrelevant to the political parties. And that means that many of us are ignored by the politicians who are supposed to represent us"

Surrey Council area is planning to change to be a Unitary Authority - I'm hoping that will be a good time to press for the advantages for a truely democratic way of selecting our Councillors. Unfortunately, we get to skip this particular May's local elections because the powers that be would rather people with a stale mandate drive this massive change rather than elect new people to do it - that would be a waste, you see 😜
Anyways electoral-reform.org.uk/why-al gives a good account of the democratic deficit inherint in the current "democracy". #FPTP #MakeVotesMatter #PR

Interesting article from the Electoral Reform Society. Something I didn't know - "when 16- and 17-year-olds have the vote, they’re more likely to vote than their counterparts who were enfranchised at 18" - electoral-reform.org.uk/we-sho

Skokie voters will now have more choices and more power in future local elections. Congrats to Skokie, and thank you to all who helped get this on the ballot and passed!

No it is a stupid system, because all votes on the party that does nót win are ignored. There is no such thing as a perfect election system, but I think has the most flaws. I do know that the hashtag is more of a US and UK thing, but I'm now talking about 's system.

Ranked choice voting levels the playing field for women, candidates of color, and people new to the political game. Candidates don't have to worry about "spoiling the election" and voters don't have to worry about "strategic voting." With RCV, everyone gets a fair chance in our elections and voters can vote their true preferences.

When Justin Trudeau resigned, he said he regretted leaving the First Past the Post voting system in place.

I just signed a #MakeVotesMatter open letter warning #KeirStarmer not to make the same mistake as Trudeau.
