"The Tyrannosaur’s Feathers by @AdamStuartSmith is a fabulous, informative, interesting, engaging & beautifully laid out pic/book about the discovery of new fossils & scientific advances that have changed the understanding of T-Rex’s appearance. @AdamStuartSmith @JonathanEmmett This looks fantastic - congratulations!
Happy Friday!
Have you had a toxic week? Consider eating the stinging cells of your enemies and turning them into protective armor, like this Shag-rug #nudibranch

@ahpadt oh that's so interesting. Thanks so much.
It only just hit me that the reason so many journalists (including, occasionally, me!) still post their work and some of their musings to Twitter is that it remains almost zero effort to do so.
Shows how a place can maintain the illusion of activity when people are only putting in a tiny fraction of the effort they once did.
I really like #whiskey, but I've been thinking about it's #environmental impact lately. And, damn, #Islay. This story (from a while back) is just about oil too. Laphroaig et al burn a LOT of #peat. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/aug/30/sustainable-scotch-hebridean-distillery-aims-for-net-zero-whisky
it's weird how often people blame the technology of Mastodon for the failure of users to stick around instead of the most blindingly obvious, actual reasons:
1. habits are hard to break. people used to twitter or insta or FB are going to instinctually open those apps first
2. network effects are incredibly powerful. switching social networks isn't like trying a new toothpaste. networks move to new services *slowly* even when they're incredibly popular
Only recently did Hunsrück slate get its first eurypterid (a sea scorpion). This critter is estimated to be about 190 cm long! Based on its remains, it was likely carried for a distance before it was buried.

@mjohanning Rooks, man. They look so badass.
Some corvid drama! I am not quite sure what happened here, but it looks like the adult rook got a bit annoyed by the juvenile trying to steal its food.
Also the Jackdaw in the background just observing and thinking, "Here we go again".

An interesting article by Ben Jacob in today's Observer:
'My law-breaking mission to save Britain’s endangered orchids'
Apparently it's a stereotype that scientists aren't creative. So share your creative side! I knit. I can only knit square shapes, no cables. Complicated for me is a hat. But choosing the yarn and the pattern of knit/purl, that's all a creative endeavor! (Thanks @DrPlanktonguy for the idea to share! )
Hi new people! I'm Perry. I think a #reintroduction is probably in order.
I study the #evolution and #biodiversity of cave #insects to inform #conservation management, naming of species, resilience to #climatechange, & more. 🐛 🦗 🦋 🐞
I'm also interested in #neurodiversity in academia, #degrowth, #localism, and #climatejustice! 🏳️🌈 🌏 ☀️

@AndrewDonkin that's so nice! I only went once when I was a kid, but it made such an enormous impression on me!
