Hey guys, I'm looking for a solution for our trail maintenance.

I'm looking for a very easy "system" where people can log that they checked the trail and upload images (it's important that the exif/gps info of the images is retained so that one knows WHERE the photos were taken).

Transporting antimatter in a truck, on the road β€” what could possibly go wrong? CERN delivers fascinating science that also serves as a plot for a fantastic near-future thriller. β€œThe butlerian faction has now placed the antimatter container they stole from the CERN truck at an unknown main station in a big city and they demand the global end of AI. Battery power of the containment will be depleted in 5 hours, madam president. ” ;)

@woollypigs there's one thing you could add, I think. Here in Austria and other parts of Central Europe, ticks often transmit tick-borne #encephalitis (#TBE), a serious viral infection that among other things can lead to paralysis of the arms or legs and permanent disability. Once infected, there is not much you can do except treat the symptoms, but there is a preventive vaccine that most people in affected areas receive and that provides protection for some years.

@dangillmor I have been using #Garmin watches for years for all kinds of sports, mainly #TrailRunning. And like many others, I tried out this strange new premium feature, only to cancel it after a few days.

However, the article makes objectively false claims, as no basic features were hidden behind a paywall. The features that were previously free are still free, only some new and rather useless things like this AI nonsense have been put behind a paywall.

Although I have very clear political views, I very much try to be very restrained here on Mastodon.

But this tracker for the notorious #Project2025 is something very special, because the half-life of news is unfortunately getting shorter and shorter, and given the amount of nonsense currently being produced in the glorious "Land of the Free" it's easy to lose track of all the bullshit.

Kudos @AAKL for finding it!

The difference between creating β€œa gigantic plagiarism laundering apparatus” and β€œa vibrant commons of the human knowledge” is social and not technical.

No technology can make the former become the latter. Or protect anyone from it.

Uh oh

The Verge: Microsoft shuts off Bing Search APIs and recommends switching to AI

"Microsoft is shutting off access to its Bing Search results for third-party developers. The software maker quietly announced the change earlier this week, noting that Bing Search APIs will be retired on August 11th and that β€œany existing instances of Bing Search APIs will be decommissioned completely, and the product will no longer be available for usage or new customer signup.”

... Wired reports that some big customers of Bing’s APIs will retain access to the service after the August 11th cutoff. DuckDuckGo uses Bing to power its search engine, and it has confirmed that it will still have access. Other smaller developers won’t be so lucky, though."

πŸš€ Voyager 1 isn’t done yet β€” not even close πŸ§ πŸ”§πŸ“‘

NASA just pulled off another miracle save:
πŸ›°οΈ The spacecraft’s primary roll thrusters, offline since 2004, were believed permanently dead
🧯 With backup thrusters at risk of failure, JPL engineers gambled on a high-stakes heater reset
πŸ”₯ If wrong, it could’ve caused a small onboard explosion
πŸ“‘ If right, it would restore control β€” 15.6 billion miles from Earth

They were right. The thrusters fired. Voyager 1 can still hold its course.

This wasn’t a reboot. It was old-school problem-solving, deep systems knowledge, and the audacity to trust an idea that might just work.

The most distant human object is still flying β€” because a team believed it could.

A whole day wasted chasing a ghost

The image below shows the status of some #WireGuard connections in #OPNsense. Make a guess: what does the red x symbol in the image mean?

For me, it was an indication that something was wrong with this peer. So I started digging - all to no avail.

At the end of the day, it turns out that the red x just means that the connection has not yet been established due to a lack of traffic.

As soon as I generated some traffic, the color changed from red to green ...

A screenshot showing a part of the "WireGuard Status" page in OPNsense, an open source firewall distribution.

It shows a table with 3 columns: Status, Device and Type.
The first row has a green tick icon as Status, wg1 as Device and interface as Type.
The second row has a green tick icon as Status, wg1 as Device and peer as Type.
The third row has a black question mark icon as Status, wg1 as Device and peer as Type.
The fourth row has a red x icon as Status, wg1 as Device and peer as Type.

@hal_pomeranz @jalefkowit the real, decisive difference then is primarily in how "smart" the window manager arranges the many terminal windows without (too much) overlapping 😁

Sounds like stuff for a serious competition!

Just saw an incredibly powerful talk that was supposed to be about open education but was really about our jobs as educators as universities and science are being destroyed by oligarchy and fascism. Meanwhile, I got my first (I'm sure not last) email from a US scientist seriously asking about moving to Canada, and set up a zoom meeting with a reporter to comment on the US cancelling all research on atmospheric pollution from satellites

Holy shit guys, I need some goat snuggles.
