New, from me: Pakistani Firm Shipped Fentanyl Analogs, Scams to US

A Texas firm recently charged with conspiring to distribute synthetic opioids in the United States is at the center of a vast network of companies in the U.S. and Pakistan whose employees are accused of using online ads to scam westerners seeking help with trademarks, book writing, mobile app development and logo designs, a new investigation reveals.

This story was quite a lot of work, and I really hope some good can come of it. The scale of this operation is something to behold:

A photo of the front door at the Texas offices of eWorldTrade, 360 Digital Marketing LLC, and a related company called RetroCube. The latter two firms are connected to a vast network of sites selling ghostwriting, wikipedia editing, logo and website design services which have strong connections to entities and individuals in Pakistan that have been ripping people off.

The statement “why would I bother to read something someone couldn't be bothered to write?” almost perfectly captures so many peoples’ feelings about #AI.

And it evokes @pluralistic’s reminder that although AI probably can’t do your job, an AI salesman can probably convince your boss that it can.

In the end, this technology (or rather the market for this tech) is aimed squarely at its least noble use: cheapening and degrading human labor that doesn’t fit neatly into a balance sheet.

in the Olden Dayes people planted lilacs around a privvy bc a) they have a bit of a deodorant effect & b) after the privvy is gone, when you had to dig a new privvy or well or cellar you knew where NOT to dig

anyway I think this every time I see lilacs somewhere like an alley behind a 100 year old house

wide angle view of a narrow dirt alley overgrown with blackberries and lilac bushes. To the left is a really great tree fort and to the right is a small bit of graffiti reading “ORE” or “OPIE” or “ORC” or something like that

Three ER visits. 20 hours of suffering. Two ultrasounds to prove a fetus had died. Nevaeh Crain was 18. Texas law killed her. Abortion bans chilled doctors into inaction. Now she’s gone.

I guess my non-Italian friends do not know that not only there is a word in Italian for a person that may be elected pope (“papabile”, literally “popeable”), but that word is also commonly used to describe anything a choice can fall upon. For example, if I talk about “popeable dates” for a meetup or “popeable destinations” for a vacation, it's neither unusual nor funny, it's just a common word for that concept

Swinging into Breakfast

"This image captures a striking northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) in mid-air, its brilliant red plumage contrasting against the soft tones of the wooden bird feeder below. The cardinal’s wings are slightly spread, showcasing a delicate blur of movement as it prepares to land. Its sharp black mask and orange beak are pointed forward, creating a sense of focus and intent.

The feeder itself is charmingly shaped like a miniature porch swing, suspended by sturdy cables that add to its rustic appeal. The wood’s natural grain and warm tones complement the earthy backdrop, giving the scene a cozy, welcoming feel. Light filters softly through the surrounding trees, casting gentle shadows and enhancing the cardinal’s vibrant color.

This moment, frozen in time, embodies grace and anticipation—the cardinal hovering for just an instant before settling onto the feeder, a familiar ritual of nature. The photographer’s credit, “© Swede's Photographs,” is visible in the bottom left corner." - Copilot

I've listened to an interview with @emilymbender on the "Vocal Fries" podcast. Most of what she said there was similar to what she usually says and writes, so even though I agree with all of it, most of it was not new. There was, however, a highlight that I enjoyed immensely: A recommendation to replace the anthropomorphizing term "chat bot" with a more precise and neutral term "conversation simulator". I'm happily adopting it, and you should consider it, too!

Remote code execution vulnerability found in meshtastic, looks potentially bad enough that you might be able to make a worm.

Microsoft Copilot for SharePoint just made recon a whole lot easier. 🚨

One of our Red Teamers came across a massive SharePoint, too much to explore manually. So, with some careful prompting, they asked Copilot to do the heavy lifting...

It opened the door to credentials, internal docs, and more.

All without triggering access logs or alerts.

Copilot is being rolled out across Microsoft 365 environments, often without teams realising Default Agents are already active.

That’s a problem.

Jack, our Head of Red Team, breaks it down in our latest blog post, including what you can do to prevent it from happening in your environment.

love environmental storytelling

a pair of bolt cutters above a power meter, the siding of the house where they've attempted to cut mains power is blackened with fire because this was a very poor choice
