Not to be outdone this morning, Mt. Edgecumbe decided to glow pink with the morning sun.
#Natives: if your doc tries to push the narrative that Natives have higher rates of alcohol abuse, please point them to the study below. Natives abstain from alcohol at higher rates (probably because we've been told for several generations that we are drunks) than white people and our binge rate is the same as why folks. I am so tired of this narrative. It hampers our treatment at clinics and leads to mistrust of docs. MDs NEED to be educated on this.
I see there's chatter about creators being discouraged from posting their shop links and promoting their art for sale etc. on fedi.
Most of the pre-influx userbase of the fediverse chose to come here because they're tired of corporations and capitalism. They are very eager to support indie creators and very receptive to seeing shop links, Patreon/Ko-Fi links, commission sheets, etc.
I encourage our members to share their shop links liberally. People want to support you here. 💜

A kind observation that exclusively calling this place "Mastodon" has a bit similar energy as saying "I just sent a GMail."
"Fediverse" (or "fedi") is a more inclusive, general term.
Mastodon is just one of many software projects that talk to each other to create this multi-instance social network:
https://axbom.com/fediverse/
(kudos to @axbom for this fantastic infographic!)
There are blogs, Reddit-like communities, video instances and many more, all part of fedi.
Have just become aware of @ZhiZhu's excellent list! I wasn't sure of the etiquette. I figured it was okay to swipe some of the information because it was public domain, but have cited each instance and provided footnote links back to where I got it. Here is ZhiZhu's list in case you'd like to follow the evolution of that one too: https://newsie.social/@ZhiZhu/109535917701223440
For thousands of years, fermenting beer was considered a household task for #women.
By the Middle Ages, some sold beer at English markets. Female brewers wore tall, pointy hats to be easily spotted. They stood by cauldrons & often had cats to keep mice away.
Sound familiar? It should.
You see, when male brewers felt threatened, they accused the women of witchcraft. These rumors may have led to some witch iconography we still recognize today.

I live at one of the ski resorts close to Los Angeles. This and following two weeks are referred as hell weeks by anyone who has to interact with tourists.
Please, if you are traveling somewhere, be kind to all those people who are working at that location. Don't make their life hell.

Menopause must be normalized at work. Managers must make their workplaces psychologically safe. Leaders should be open about their own lives (whether with regard to menopause or other circumstances) and demonstrate a willingness to listen to and learn from others’ experiences.

A message from #NASA #InSight on #Mars: My power’s really low, so this may be the last image I can send. Don’t worry about me though: my time here has been both productive and serene. If I can keep talking to my mission team, I will – but I’ll be signing off here soon. Thanks for staying with me. #planets #astro #space #astrodon
"Every disaster movie starts with the government ignoring a scientist."
With#climate change, the government is ignoring thousands of them, and this one is real!
Here's wonderful rock art, around 30,000 years old, Australia. Another of my interests that I'd managed not to hashtag is #ancientart, #rockart, #caveart
Is there a guide or how-to out there for scaling Mastodon horizontally? I've see a lot of blogs and articles about it but no real guides walking people through the process. Other than saying "you should move these processes to their own server" but not saying how to do that while making it work with Mastodon.
Any help is appreciated. 😉

I just sponsored Mastodon at the $500 a month tier. Gotta keep those servers chugging!
LA-area people: Before the pandemic, a friend and I were hosting a regular "take-aparty" meetup at the Supplyframe Designlab in Pasadena. The idea was teach folks how to take things apart and learn how they were designed and manufactured.
It looks like I'm going to be starting that event up again in the coming year. I'm still working out details with the Designlab, but it's possible the first one will be next month.
Just an FYI if you're interested in that kind of thing!
