Here are some stats white supremacists ignore: 100% of slaves were BLACK 90% of Blacks were SLAVES. 0% of Whites were SLAVES 100% of Blacks--whether they were slaves or not--had NO RIGHTS and were not considered US citizens. To the "My ancestors didn't own slaves" crowd: Your ancestors were NOT slaves either. This means a lot. It's called privilege. Not having slave ancestors is privilege. PS: For the "what about the Irish" folks: Blacks did not stage bloodbath riots against the Irish to prove that they were really "White" (try to follow along). Google: The Draft Riots (NYC) 1863 Philadelphia Riots of 1834, 1842, and 1871 Cincinnati Riots of 1829 and 1841 (just to name a few involving Irish and other working-class Whites engaging in mob violence against Blacks).

We sat down with CSC Awards "Theatrical Feature" nominee, DP Jeremy Benning, ASC, CSC, to discuss all things 40 ACRES, from working in the unpredictable elements on a functional farm, to seamlessly blending practical and visual effects to make the film’s not-too-distant, post-apocalyptic future a reality.

“We ended up landing on the ARRI ALEXA 35 and the MasterBuilt Soft Flare primes. When R.T. and I both looked at the lenses, we liked the slightly vintage look. They were still pretty sharp, but they had softer edges. It was a slightly older feel. It's a good sense of grittiness of the world, without too much character or too dirty looking, but also not too sharp and clean. So it was that sweet spot in those lenses.


…The Alexa had just that extra bit of detail in the very bottom end of shadow that, especially with our contrasty day interiors, night exteriors, that kind of thing, and knowing that we had a cast of a lot of different skin tones, but a lot of darker skin tones, that having that extra bit of detail to pull up in the grade if we ever wanted to lift someone's face a tiny little bit here and there, that would give us the most flexibility given the nature of our schedule.


Keslow did an amazing job supporting us… We didn't have any problems with camera gear. Everything worked. The cameras performed, all the lenses, everything performed well. It was prepped well. For all this elbows up talk, what about Canadian films? At the theatre yesterday, Jurassic world was full but 40 Acres was empty. It's now one of my favourites.

It's about a black and indigenous family. The action and violence is secondary to this theme. Great pacing and cinematography. It all feels very Canadian if that makes sense. I'm a nobody but if you stumble on this post, go watch it!
